A friend's filly foal was weaned this weekend. She's had her reserved since she was 2 months old; now just over 6 months old. She picked her up at the weekend as there were serious issues on the yard and she was concerned for the filly's safety. The filly is used to group turnout and has been put in with two young gelding who are very friendly and happy to have her - however she seems to be missing mum a bit too much and is frequently suckling on the boys' willies :o ... will this behaviour stop of its own accord or should she be worried? Is there anything she can do? The boys don't seem to mind! :o

It sounds as if it is a comfort thing if she's just been weaned, and has been moved away from her regular group. I've had youngsters in that have suckled anything they can get hold of, especially if they have been weaned quickly.

It should pass in time, I wouldn't worry about it unduly and other than separate them which would perhaps cause more stress there is very little to be done to stop it anyway. The lads will move her on if they have had enough of her.

I do gradual weaning with all my foals and never observed this behaviour. Figured it was a bit shock related, but good to know it's not uncommon. She's a lovely little filly but comes across as a bit of a mummy's girl. Eating well, though, so that's good.
