Foal & walking?

My mare had her foal 2 days ago. She had him right at the end of the field. I tried to walk her the same day of him being born down to the stable but he would not follow. I thought it might be because he is so young. Yesterday was the same, he wouldn't follow & the mare got upset.
I have asked the vet to call out today to check him all over & to help me get him into the stable.
I have to be back at home this afternoon for a very important meeting. The vet cannot tell me what time they will be able to get to me. I am worried as they let me down with the last vist to sedate the little pony, they didn't turn up & said they didn't have enough vets on that day.
The weather is cooler & looks like rain. The forecast speaks of heavy downpours later.

If it comes to the last result & I have no choice but to try & move him myself, what is the best way? People have told me to pick him up & carry him, but I am scared of hurting him. I don't have an horsebox to try to get them into.

The last foal I had was years ago & the foal followed the mare straight away into the stable.

Can anyone help me with any advice please.

aww hope all goes well for you with vet today - if you do need to move him get someone else and get like a long towel both hold each end of the towel and kind of not pull him along but encourage him to walk when pressure but on his backend might take a while because he is very young.

Thank you Siani,
We tried with the lead rope but he kept trying to buckaroo lol
I will take a bath towel with me today as that seems better then the lead rope :)
Fingers crossed.

You simply need to have one person on the mare - one on the foal.

The person with the foal walks with their hands lightly on their bum, encouraging them forward, and one at their chest to direct them when necessary.

The person on the mare needs to keep the mare walking forward, but always being aware of where the foal and handler are.

It will take you ages to get up the field, but foal will soon get the hang of it.

Don't be tempted to try and lead it - just quitely encourage from behind.

get someone to give you a hand to lead the mare, get a lead rope and loop it around his neck and stand behind his shoulder and put you arm around his bottom to usher him forward but using the rope to stop him running off. probably the only way your going to get him in. dont worry if he bucks, he wont get very high at his age and hel soon stop when he knows your no threat, and if he gets you it wont hurt :D walk him alongside the mare, its unusual for them not to follow, has he had his first feed from her??

This is exaxtly what the vet did today :)
I was leading the mare & the vet carried him into the field from the shelter. Before long she got the foal following the mare. It didn't take to long to get him beside her. I was made up, I could stop smiling. It was wonderful to see them walking side by side.

He is feeding all the time lol When he was born he started feeding & never seems to stop lol He as tried to kick me & buckaroo me no end of times in the last 2 days O_0
I never knew that they did that so much. I hope he does get the idea that I'm no threat to him, as when he gets a little bigger it will hurt.
I want to stroke him every time I see him lol A foal is a wonderful sight.

i tell you what he will like is a good scratch, foals are very itchy and give them a scratch any where and they love you forever!!
