Recently weaned foal ID X TB noticed off hind fetlock joint clicking action when walking.

Second day foal obviously lame with occassional hoping motion.

Spoke to vet who adv box rest & Metacam for four days which did not bring any relief. Vet adv that growth spirt combined with bronking in paddock may have caused jarring to the joint.

Vet came out again this week & said that there may be a bony growth on joint or possible growth plate issue but would like x-ray this friday coming.

Has anyone had this experience before & what has been the outcome?? Just waiting for the x-ray results.

I had a filly with 'growth plate issues' in her fetlocks with box rest, dietary management and bandaging it settled down.
Hers also occurred shortly after weaning... with such issues there would usually be fairly signifficant swelling too..

I don't know what your vet has sugested but my filly had to have a diet containing minimal protein so I had to cut out her balancer and alfa-a and she was fed soaked hay.

good luck with the xrays. I hope its nothing to worry about.

Many thanks for that.

Yes small swellings have appeared although not hot & the vet hasn't mention feed but that has been in the back of my mind as my filly sounds like she having exactly the same feed but a very tiny amount & hay.

I may just try that as she i good condition & would hardly miss the feed it's so small but worth a try without causing to much upset.

If she is in good condition and is well grown I would definately cut out the balancer and replace if you wish with eirther a stable lick or a broad spec vit and min supp (much lower protein content). My filly was a tall but skinny CB and I really do believe that the larger breeds shouldn't have their growth encouraged with really rich feeds...

Yes i agree i don't believe in feeding foals up.

Have already started this morning with no feed, she already has a baileys young stock paddock lick in stable so just damp hay for the moment & we'll see if this helps.

Hi again

Had foal x-rayed Friday afternoon, x-ray showed growth plate issue with both hind fetlock joints but slightly more growth on off hind joint hence lame due to being slightly uneven...Probably didn't help the situation by hoolieing about after weaning either!

Vet has said to cut out any feed which i had already done & doesn't seem to think i was over feeding..phew! Adv me to turn her out & keep a close eye on her for any abnormalities such as toes starting to turn out or any sudden lameness again.

Although she has the swellings on her joints since being turned out she does seem to be slowly improving so fingers crossed she will come right with plenty of rest & management.
