Saw this on FB, wondering if anyone has seen it before? Foal born with no mane!
It's probably congenital - though could also be an extreme hereditary condition. There are about 100 congenital disorders recognised in horses (horses are far less recognised as suffering these conditions compared to - say - dogs or humans.
Thankfully, I've been very short of congenital conditions in my foals - I had one born last year whose obvious defects were lack of a sheath and scrotal sack - but he obviously had a few other disorders - he died quickly a about 36 hours old. Made me panic when another colt was born ths year without a sheath - but it grew over the next 2 weeks!! He was totally unrelated on either side to the foal the year before. And now he's perfectly normal!
I think breeders tend to keep quiet about anything 'peculiar'!!
Janet, sorry to hear about your colt, but how interesting that the later one grew a sheath. Literally grew it? Was he full term?
