It is very addictive - have not watched any this year but last year my boss and I watched two mares give birth while I was AT WORK as I couldn't stop watching and then neither could he!!!! Wasn't interested in watching goats or puppies being born though.... have dogs and once upon a time kept goats too but only interested in the foals.
OMFG!!!!!!!!!! - watched that foaling last night - a PERFECT example of how NOT to foal a mare!!!! - I was shocked to say the least and couldn't watch after a while as it was so cringe worthy and made me soooo angry!!!! I wouldn't be surprised if the foal is a dummy foal and dies and the mare has been torn!! Surprise surprise she has turned the cameras off because of the huge backlash on the internet with people equally shocked! Mind you she has been talked about on the net before as she breeds from her yearling colts because they are a cool colour - despite being the most hideously put together things!
She might as well have used a truck to rip the little foal out - she was pulling with an awful lot of force in all the wrong directions when the mare wasn't even contracting!
She wouldn't leave the mare alone - every time she pooped someone was in there to pooper scoop it and she kept putting the mare outside when it was trying to settle, 2 days the poor thing has been in labour but hasn't been allowed to get on with it! The mare was obviously really not happy with her being in the box and was showing it in her behavior and reluctance to get on with it and lie down, as have her other mares.
She ripped the foal out without even letting it absorb all the blood from the placenta and just chucked it at the mares head, she was more concerned how the foal was marked and wether it was a colt or filly - that's why she was flipping the thing all over the place while on her phone - than if it was OK, she was so rough with it and wouldn't stop fussing over it with towels - I'm amazed the mare didn't attack her - I wish it had to teach her a lesson! The poor thing just lay there completely flat out twitching and breathing oddly for a very long time - I would have got the vet out straight away, it didn't feed apparently for 3 or 4 hrs or more and was acting weirdly, she then turned the cameras off apparently and said she was getting the vet - I stopped watching it before that.
She gave them no time to bond or rest - just man handled the foal over to the side of the stable and started mucking out, and even pulled the placenta out - the poor mare was knackered and very stressed!!!
She even stuck her dirty hand right inside the mare at one point without washing it, I bet you it won't get any antibiotics! - no wonder this farm has such a high mare/foal mortality rate!!!
There really needs to be some sort of license to breed/own horses so that idiots like this can't get near anything with a pulse - the shocking thing is people will watch this and think because these people have a few mares they know what they are doing and think that is how you foal a horse!!!!!
It's interesting how people can view the same thing, and see totally different things! I watched the mare foal too, and my description of it wouldn't have matched yours at all!
Afraid I agree with Alex, it was appalling to watch and I hope novices that saw it DON'T think that is the way to go.
There's another thread in NL about it which links to another forum, now that's interesting to read as apparently this breeder yanks all her foals out that way, there are Youtubes of them all too. Not nice watching, in fact I couldn't.
Didn't see the video but have read through the posts on the forum that was linked in one of the feedback boxes. Even with a lot of theory knowledge on foaling and a small amount of practical experience, the way people have described what she did sounds like it was an awful and very stressful foaling!
I wonder if anyone asked her that if/when she has/had a child she'd like it pulled out of her with a doctor with dirty hands? I understand barns/stables cant be completely sterile - nowhere is but surely she could have washed her hands with clean hot water most of the time or worn gloves which would have been better? It takes a couple of seconds to do which could be vital in preventing an infection that might cause you to lose mare/foal.
There was a link on facebook, so I clicked and there she was, waters breaking and I thought what good timing! Im afraid I couldnt watch it through, as after 20mins I was so anxious for the mare and foal and knowing there was nothing I could do, the best thing was turn it off!
I've been lucky/unlucky enough to see three foals born there this year on cam. All have been pulled out when the mare is not contracting. One filly died at a few days old although i think i read that owner said she died as a result of infection from eating mums poo?? The foal born last night, a big colt did seem to be presented awkwardly but personally i feel she did not give the mare enough time to progress without intervention. It looked like a very traumatic foaling for both mum and baby
Gotta say - as a novice breeder with my mare in foal due to foal next month - she put me right off.
Ive been on the "foaling course" at a well respected breeders and they never told me to do all that. in fact i was told to leave well alone and observe etc. I agree with all your comments - i thought she was very rough, and i didnt like the fact that she was rough with the foal, the mare and wouldnt leave her alone.
Don't let her put you off Tibbycat Most foalings are a joy to watch, unfortunately last nights was not but that owner is known for foaling using "unethical procedures".
I didnt want to say anything when i first posted as i got slated last time but what the hell. I too was shocked at her yanking and tugging at the poor foals legs. All in the wrong direction, and not even when the mare was pushing. Hope the poor lads legs dont suffer from it

After reading all the posts about this birth I'm glad I missed it. I did watch the Finali birth - which was the first I have ever watched and I found that quite disturbing. So I'm with Gucci_b and will not be watching anymore!
I just hope the poor little colt will be alright after his ordeal
