Foalie with swollen glands?

My foal has had swollen glands for a little while & we don't seem to know what is causing it. She's 100% in every other respect (v alert/shiny coat/normal temp, no discharge) and is eating her head off so I don't think it's anything serious. Vet reckoned that it was 'something challenging her immune system' and quite common in foals - just cos their immune systems are vunerable. Has anyone else experienced this - should I be worried or am I just being soft?

They've been up and down for a week or so - will call the vet again tomorrow I think
 
This happened to my foal last year. She had swollen glands but no other symptoms at all, although some of the others in the field had snotty noses. The vet looked at her a couple of times and said it was a viral infection. She was well in herself all of that time. A year later she still has swollen glands which fluctuate in size periodically. Vet says should go eventually.
 
Thanks memo - I presume your vet didn't give you anything for her? Am happy with her condition/weight gain etc so don't really want to call the vet out every two weeks! Will speak to them on the phone and see what they reckon.
 
memo I would be looking at having cultures taken, strangles can hang around without every showing any other symptoms to the carriers, the glands really shouldn't be swollen for any length or perdiod of time. Likewise arwenplusone cultural swabs might be worth taking, we have had strangles on numerous occassions and symptoms vary from one animal to the other, some never errupt into full blown strangles cases but just linger.
 
Would strangles hang around for a year without any of the other horses getting symptoms? there was some question of herpes last year and I wonder if she got that He's coming to see another horse in a couple of weeks so I'll have another word with him. He looked a few weeks ago and thought there was some scar tissue.

It is very unlikely, but depends on the age of the other horses under fives are more prone to contracting it. From what I understand carriers can lie undetected for very very long periods of time and it requires flushing and treatment of the gutteral pouches.
 
my foal had swollen glands 2 . and she was tested 4 strangles but was negative, she had 3 lumps then 2 then 3 , and i was sooo worrid but shes fine now, maybe its just cause they arnt ammune yet, i dunno, but i can understand your worries, ..xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
