We used both when my mare foaled in 2005
My husband bought a cctv camera (infra red ) so it could be viewed in a dark stable .He rigged it up to the computer in the office so I could look at it in the evenings and when I got up in the night it meant I didn't have to keep going out and disturb the mare.We left it in the stable until the foal went into his own stabe so I could keep an eye on mum and foal.
I rented a foal alarm from this company www.wyke-equine.co.uk/foaling-alarm/the-wyke-mark-i-electronic-alarm/ got her used to it about 2 weeks before due date using it at night in the stable. They cost around £400 to buy and rent for £30 per week .It worked perfectly and woke me up at half past midight in time to go out to the stable to watch him born.I rented ot for 3 weeks in total . Both certainly gave me piece of mind if I bred again would certainly do the same
We have had many different types of cameras and alarms over the years at work and home.
I used the foaling alarms for 6 seasons and would say they are 80% reliable, you cannot guarantee the mare will sweat and as you get later in the season and the nights are warmer some mares will get warm and set them off, unless you are meticulous about changing the sensitivity on them.
We have a fantastic IP PTZ camera at the moment with which I can watch 4 mares at the farm from the comfort of my home 5 miles away(or any computer with internet). The model we have is wired but have wireless models also, I would recommend it and costs under £300.00.
We also use the small wireless infa red cameras at home, pictures can be a bit fuzzy at times but they are great as you can connect them to any TV, mine is on the bedside table so I only have to open my eyes
. A one camera kit costs about £70.00. Really worth getting the slightly longer antenna as picture quality is improved.
Pm me if you want details of where to get hold of them.
