Foals at Beauliea sales

Dentist has looked at our 3 1/2 yr old and said she is only just turning 3yrs old. She is forest bred and went through the sales as a foal, was bourght by someone without mum but she saw mum when she bourght the foal.
If this is true and she was a late foal born around this time of year she must have been no older than 2 months old when she was taken away from her mum, as i understand the last sale is in november.
It says on her passport she was born in may, but i understand they cant be sure when they are born out on the forest. Is it possible that a 2 month old foal can be taken away from mum, shoved through the sale ring and no one notices how young she is, or no one cares?

Or what do you think the chances are that the dentist is wrong?
 
this used to happen a lot, but each pony has to be deemed fit for sale by a vet before going in the pens, i think realy young foals still get through, i hav'nt been for a while so they may have tightened up on this now.
 
Well i think its disgusting, from what you say fii its seems likley that she was only 2 months old when she went through.
How could a vet look at a 2mth old foal and pass her as fit to go through the ring and be taken away from mum!

I thourght a good dentist can tell by how much in wear the centrals are which erupt at 2 1/2. I may be wrong tho?
 
IT may be that she went in the pens with her mum and through the ring on her own or maybe sold afterwards outside the ring, it does happen but i thought they had tightened up on this now.
 
They errupt at approx 2 1/2, so no you couldn't be that exact. My 3yo was born in July 06 and his central incisors didn't come through till he was nearly 3.

Still, I suppose it is possible that the foal could have been 3 or 4 months, which isn't that great either really.
 
I have an older NF bred pony which was probably sold too young, he has so many issues and it makes me wonder why.

Let's hope the dentist is slightly out and yours was older otherwise it is really quite sad.
 
I have had several vets and dentists age many of my hombred ponies incorrectly so I just treat the aging as an approximation. As regards the mares foaling on the forest, the owners do keep quite a good eye on what is happening to their mares and are usually quite good about when the foals were born.

Im starting to think that maybe she was born around July time. This also ties in with the person i bourght her from saying she had her from 4mths old.
The only concern i have is that 6mths makes a big difference in the work i had planed to do with her. She has only just been backed and is just walking round the block at mo. I had planned not to do anything more untill next spring, when i thourght she would be turning 4. However i dont want to start schooling her if she is actually only 3 1/2 then.

The last sale is in November towards the end of the month. Foals are meant to be a minimum of 4 months old when they are sold. I'm sure it would have been noticed/noticeable if she was 2 months old when she went through. Therefore I think it is unlikely that is the case with your filly.

Some owners check their mares every day when they are due to foal. Others don't.

Possible, but in my opinion very unlikely. There are vets and various animal welfare society officers walking around at those sales, so it ought to have been picked up if it happened, either them noticing themselves or someone bringing it to their attention. Equally, the rules are in place to stop such things happening as they reflect badly on the Beaulieu Road Sales.
