Foals at Livery yards?

Hiya

Interested to know what the general consensus/thoughts are re foals being kept at livery yards. A local has brought an 8month old arab filly and YO has allowed it at the yard. The people already have 2 ggs on full livery there. They are inexperienced (don't ask why they have just bought this foal, now rugged up, on hard feed, etc) and completely oblivious to concerns of other liveries. Anyway, the foal after a week to settle has been put out with the other mares, and now, they are looking at mixing some of the mares and geldings including the filly.
Luckily my horse is on loan elsewhere now, as he is a rig, but my friend who has a gelding there is worried and I wanted to post this on here for yr views.
Just wondered what your thoughts are on this x
 
In a word AmyMay yes. Wont even begin to go into their background etc, and YO just sees them as a paying client and therefore overlooks a lot of questionable things. Just glad my boy is out of there. x
 
i have a yearling at our livery yard , no problems at all hes ungelded due to having a retained testicle and is out with my gelding and two others , i pay the normal fee same as everyone else , i,m about to send our competiotion mare to stud, so next year hopefully will have a nice tb foal which after weaning will be kept with other liveries mares and youngstock
 
My 10 month gelding old is at a DIY livery yard and is as happy as larry out with 3 older mares. I don't have any trouble with him being there or any of the other liveries, everyone adores him! I guess if they are inexperienced though that's a different situation.
 
Depends on the temperament of the herd in general but nature doesn't segregate according to age; its how young horses learn respect for their elders!

Ditto that, though it will be safer in a smaller herd with plenty of room. I have always been at DIY yards & once the foals have been weaned have been turned out with the older horses, no harm has yet come to any of them. This time round I have been lucky as for the past 18mths I have had my own paddock split into 2 for mine & it has worked out fine.
 
We have 2 youngsters at our yard one my friends 10 month old,there are no problems with herd tbh even with the more assertive ones.
 
I had my 9 month old at livery with my other horse, both were on full livery and i didn't give it a thought. He got to see more sights and sounds at livery than he would at home. He was better behaved than some of the other older horses there as well. Also if the owners are inexperienced hopefully they will get help from the YO?? I don't see it a problem at all.
 
I have mine at a livery yard but YO also has a yearling the same age & there is another so they all go out together with a 'nanny' gelding who has no shoes on.

If I had a choice I would have them at home - livery yards are not usually the best places for foals.

There are two youngsters at our yard which are out with an older pony..... dont seem to have any problems but all the horses in that field belong to two friends so they work it all out together...
 
We've got a 6 month old filly out in our field of 20 mares and geldings. She copes fine and one of the geldings keeps an eye on her.

My yearling will be going in with the same herd in a couple of months time. (the filly might be gone by then)
 
trouble at the DIY yard where we are because they keep splitting herds so the babies (fillies) are on their own because the older mare might bite them. the mare bit one once for trying to mount her and now they say that its to rough with the babies. babies now eat each others tails and play really rough!
