hi, my 5 week old foal injured both his front tendons 3 weeks ago about 3/4 of the way up, the vet said he must have caught them over the post and rail or something as not heavy enough to injure them from exercise. my question is on one side the swelling has almost disapeared but on the other a small swelling is still there, being a show pony he cant really afford to be left with a lump was just wondering if it would go down or not. many thanks.

Well it may or may not, it may be a swelling in the tendon sheath or not, due to either healing or due to injury, only time will tell. I would try to hose or put a cooling gel on the lump, cant do any harm. You could also try gently massaging it, I gently massaged my horses split ddft area only using upward movements towards the heart to dispearse the swelling, seems to have worked.

Maybe discuss the massaging with your vet first just in case. I do not want to make the injury worse.

This is one of the times you must speak with your vet not take advice from here, as massaging may make things worse not better.
They may need to scan the area to be certain of what damage has occured, just because there is only a small lump you can't rule out more serious damage.
be guided by the best person for the info, in this case your vet...

definitely get the vet to scan it, treating it properly now could well mean the difference between the foal being a sound adult horse, and perhaps not. he has time on his side as long as the right thing is done now.

Henry that is what I said, speak/see the vet before massaging!

I was just explaining what helped my horse, it wont necessarily help the foal.
