Follow on from colours....What colour is Freddie then?

I never thought genetics could be so interesting! I think I get it! Thank you so much, so is there such a thing as a white basecoat on any coloureds ever? or are they all dark with white? x

There are only two options for the base colour - black or chestnut. A horse with one black gene and one chestnut gene will look black because black is dominant over chestnut, which means that you need two chestnut genes for a horse to look/be chestnut.

I was just going to ask what a 'drum' horse is, so Thankyou Sugar.

I presumed it was just a title/description for a big horse that actually carried the drums. Like any carriage horse is a carriage horse because it pulls a carriage, or a lead rein pony a lead rein pony blah, blah, blah - regardless of its' actual forebears.

DD, how big is your boy going to make?

To my eyes he is a skewbald, to North Americans he would be a bay (or, more likely, red and white, if they weren't being fussy about his black tips) tobiano, although some may argue tovero (does he have a blue eye?)

Hi Enfys,

I have no idea what he will make? His Dam is 15.2, his sire 16hh and his grand sire 15.2, he was born 28th May 2010, and we have roughly measured him, he currently stands at 15.1 (withers) and 15.3 (bum).... he is very short backed and compact, and can either look really stunning when he's alert or a complete donkey when he's relaxed hehe. His eyes are both Brown, but you can almost see a blue tinge to one if the light catches him in a certain way.

I'm not totally up on the North American terms, but I believe (the internet doesn't lie... right? ;) ) that Toveros have tobiano + a non tobiano (AKA overo) coloured gene. So that would make DD's Freddie a Tovero because he probably has tobiano and sabino.

Tovero typically refers to a horse showing tobiano plus frame overo rather than sabino.

Sabino is not usually mentioned as it is so common - being the main cause of white feet & facial markings.

I have a bay frame overo mare -

Her foal is also a frame overo (tested heterozygous for OLWS) but it doesn't show up on him.
