Follow on from Kit279 - Thrashing a horse

My daughter has to ride with a whip whenever she's riding at her RS..they all do. The horses are all very well schooled and the children are taught the correct use of the whip. ie that a whip is used only to back up the leg...never as a punishment. If any of the children were to use the whip incorrectly they would be slung off the horse..
Much rather that than braindead ponies with numb sides from kicking.
As for those horrid children at shows?.. My daughter would only ever do that sort of thing once...... actually, I don't think she would

Im not even going to comment else I'll be ranting for hours! I think its even worse when you see 'horsey adults' beating horses and ponies on the ground and on their backs! It made me feel sick many of times!
I dont agree with novices or nasty aggresive peeps using whips/spurs as it not nice and it messes the animals up!

I also had lessons on the correct use of the whip, I think that this should be taught to all riders when they start using whips, it was very useful. I do use a whip, but only to back my leg up and only flick her with it.

I did see an adult on a highly strung TB mare, who was a regular at our local shows, The mare had a bad round as she was full of herself. He was beating her as he came out the ring, carried on beating her until she was on the floor on the concreat, then he carried on while she was on the floor!! He was dragged off the horse and taken away to calm down. This wasn't even his horse, it was a loan horse. A couple of shows later the same mare was back, but with a teenage girl, both having a fab time and not a whip in sight!!

When I learnt to ride it was on an exRDA pony so it only responded to voice commands. As I progressed I didn't bother using a whip until I needed one for a little sod of a pony when I was 14 - 9 years after I started!

Kids riding at shows generally annoy me (apologies to owners of well mannered children) because there are so many of them who over use the whip and spurs but haul on their pony's mouth.

Well I used to teach children (and adults) in riding schools when young, and misuse of the whip was never tolerated.
The owners of the riding schools all had horse welfare in the forefront of their minds (well, no-one sets up a riding school to get rich quick!) and on the few occasions when I threw children out for inappropriate behaviour (more often sly kicks/rein pulls) the owners were more than happy to give them their cash back....to get rid of them.
The trouble is when spoilt brats get bought ponies by their parents...

The riding school I used to work at rarely allowed the use of whips by children, and never spurs. There was one large pony who was rather stubborn though and better riders would be allowed to use a whip, but were taught correctly.
I also worked at a tack shop P/T time and visited many many shows, the kids always went straight to the whip box, and parents normally bought them one if they wanted it. We had to draw the line at selling strong bits to young children without the parents being present and understanindg the bit. That's a whole new debate I guess.

I've just been on a riding hol and one of the girls (our guide) was riding an absolute rocket of a horse, very skitty french thoroughbred type, with SPURS on - proper cowboy ones with wheels ???!!! Why?? I think spurs (and lots of kit in general) is still deemed 'cool' by some.

I do however ride with a whip; what else would I shake at drivers who are too fast and close!!

interesting post! I don't agree in kids wearing spurs for a start.....

One thing OH and I have agreed is that if we do have kids, they won't be allowed to have a pony until they've had a significant time around them first...my god daughter is a good example. She's been around horses/ponies for about 2 years and only got her first loan pony now....atleast you know it's not a flash in the pan interest.

Oh my god. That sounds awful and I would hope is really extreme and not common, but in general do people regularly see the whip being misused either at shows or elsewhere or is it quite unusual and that most riders love and respect their horses/ponies.

have in fact had to buy dummy spurs for showing

Why is that? Ive never understood why in certain classes you are EXPECTED to wear spurs?! Surely its better if you dont as it shows the better schooled horses?

A lot of people on here seem to think that horses spend all their time thinking up ways to get the better of their owners. Horses don't know how to "take the mick/p*** or anything else - they simply - very simply do not understand what is being asked of them - they don't know how to be "naughty". I wonder if the same people who use spurs and whips would use them on people who don't understand what is being asked of them?
I think they should ban spurs and the like from competitions.
