All this talk of shoeing regimes reminded me about my shettie mare. My tb needed doing every 8 weeks, one shettie is done every 12 (bare feet tho)...and the other never, ever needs a trim! I always ask the farrier to look but honestly, she has never needed anything doing in over 10 years. She has good solid little feet, she is registered and from a good line, but even stranger, she's severely cow hocked and you'd think her back hooves would need sorting but no. AND she is always on grass. Wierd or what?

She's cow hocked and your farrier isn't touching her feet. That does seem wierd, our old shetty stally was cow hocked(was gelded, so never bred) and it is amazing what correct trimming can do. Ajay our shetty hasn't been done for a while but if he was cow hocked I think we would get him done as often as we could get away with.

I know it sounds odd but they really are perfectly shaped and just don't need it! He's a good farrier too and has no reason to lie, I mean it's extra money for a start! P.s. the cow hocks are a birth defect, don't ask me how but her feet just seem to wear normally. I did once ask if corrective trimming would help but he says it would ruin her feet and achieve nothing (it's quite severe). The vet laughed his head off the first time he met her, said she was the first horse he'd ever seen that galloped in 3-time...

My shettie is done approx twice a year. I've just been given 2 ponies who definitely haven't seen a farrier for the last 3 years, maybe longer and they have good little feet. I had a wild little rescue pony who was 7yrs old. When he came to me he had a long flap on his off fore and had clearly never had a farrier to him. My horses have free access to a concrete yard and within days the flap had broken off and when he left a year later he had nice tidy little feet. When he was gelded we had a good look and his feet were in great condition.

Our ShirexClydesdale didn't have her back feet done for three years as the farrier couldn't get near them! She is still barefoot and has them trimmed every 12 to 14 weeks. The Appy has fronts on and has them done every 8 or 9 weeks.

Obviously perfect at self trimming

I have to have my ridden horse done every 3 weeks. He doesn't wear shoes and the more work he does the more trimming he needs.

My comp horse is done every six weeks! However, my Welsh cross companion pony only has his trimmed once every 3/4 months and less in the summer!

One of my welsh ponies hasnt been trimmed since April, the farrier looks every 6 weeks when he comes out to do the others, but he says he would be robbing me. His feet break off/wear down as nature intended. My farrier is also a very highly respected remedial farrier BTW so I dont think he is joshing me.
