Can you recommend me a dry food for my sheepdog?

Dog is around 20-22kg, very energetic dog (very good case for proving ADHD in dogs!) even for a collie and therefore drops weight very very quickly. Dog is now 5 1/2. Vet has tested everything - dog is just a "poor doer"!

Have tried JWB, Burns, Arden Grange, CRJ (I think that's the name) with no success, haven't got a PAH near me. On a very strict budget due to being out of work - £25-£30 MAX for 15kg bag. Best results seem to be on working dog foods, currently alternating between Wagg and Vitalin. Table scraps and bones are fed on top of the recommended amount of dry food.

there isnt a dry food id actually ‘recommend’ and you’ll hate me for it but -

before you dismiss it, its easy, ready prepared and balanced, you just need a free freezer drawer. Check out the price of the working range as it wont be as expensive as a £30 bag of dry food. Brilliant for putting weight on and with no additives, will ease the ADHD;) Poops will be much smaller too! The duck variety is especially good for getting weight on. that said, my young BC who is 18 months didnt put weight on from being 6 months old!.... she is your stereotypic stresshead poor dooer but now she is on natural instinct she looks amazing:cool:

Skinners field & trial - Duck & rice or Salmon & rice.
In budget and if you can't find it locally can get it delivered from Amazon.

Definitely the duck and rice over the working? He literally does not stop all day so as I'm not working he's out for about 8-10 hours.`

I would try skinners the duck range is more fatty. Or use the crunchy- for young dogs but working dogs go back on this when in season full work or they do another can't remember what called but its for very hard working dogs- maybe worth ringing them. Or try on a very low protein one to see if that helps relieve the adhd- a common thing in working breeds too much protein makes them crazy!

Another vote for Skinners. I wouldn't let it bother me TBH, he is maybe just a lean dog, I have seen pics you've posted of him and I would in no way call him a hatrack. Better skinny than overweight!

As others, protein from dry food can send them gaga, maybe look at a lower protein food. Working dog food might power him rather than sustain him, if that makes any sense.

I don't post the bad pics lol! There have been times where I can see all his ribs and feel his spine easily :( Yes the last sentence makes sense :)

Will get a bag of the skinners and see how he gets on, will also get a video of him at the yard so you can see what he is like for yourselves!

Another vote for skinners!! I also have a prone to be lean dog,not to the extent of being a worry like yours, but full of energy (irish setter, enough said lol) and never puts on weight.

I found he did really well on autarky summer, weight and condition wise.About £20 a bag as I recall. My only issue was getting hold of it in my local area, but you may have more luck depending on where you are.

He is now back on skinners maintenance (was on it before briefly but was picky about the taste, seems ok now though),as is easier to source and one of the few that don't contain fish of any kind (severe allergy on my part),and he certainly doesn't need the energy of a working food, bless him:rolleyes:

I am really limited in what I can feed due to above mentioned allergy, and refuse to spend a fortune feeding the dog,so skinners is an ideal solution and he seems well enough on it.

A food being called "working dog" does not mean it is extra energy it is just to make it VAT exempt in the same way that greyhound food is VAT exempt.
You can find foods at all protein & fat levels with these labels.

You're not allowed to advertise on this forum plus fresh salmon has more moisture than the meal. I suggest you stop advertising and lookup the dried dog food index that was previously posted. Link back to the forum that has on originally and you'll see some very scientific explanations about fresh v meal.

I did not realise I was advertising, well, anymore than all the skinners comments. Was trying to be helpful sorry to offend.

You've posted on another thread that you have conducted trials on behalf of Kronch, and you have Kronch as a user-name. Admin will most likely, and probably correctly, see that as advertising. I've sent you a PM advising you of the risks on here of advertising. Perhaps you've missed it.

If you've no interest in this forum other than advertising Kronch, then you're unlikely to last long, but if your interests in canines go beyond marketing, then I'd suggest that you desist, and a bit tout suite! ;)

Alec.

This is not advertising?????????Confused here

Another vote for Skinners. Am currently using duck and rice but am swapping to salmon and rice when i have finished the bag i'm on. Nothing wrong with the duck just think the salmon might be better for her activity needs.

?? I'm assuming a post has been deleted as this thread is a year old now, and the new posts are disjointed.

On a side note, and as an update, Dogga has been on Skinners Maintenance since last year. and is doing well on it. He will always be a hyper dog - he is a Welsh Sheepdog not a Border Collie, they are bred to move sheep 200+ miles over Welsh mountains so have a lot more energy than the average Border! :)

Gratuitous pic!

I find it absolutely incredulous that another poster has managed to repeat, word for word, using exactly the same idioms as me exactly what I said about a product in a older thread! Whatsmore that they seem to have the same dog as me too! What a huge coincidence!

Out of interest, and just looking at that site, to feed my dog (21kg) it would cost me £40-£50 a month, or am I reading it wrong?

Neversaynever, I read it that Kronch was quoting your post and suggesting it was advertising. Which it isn't its recommending which IMO is totally different, after all your user name isn't Natural Instinct :) !
