Following on from Loverly's 'Good Farrier' thread, what makes a good Farrier in your opinion?

I have had good and bad in the past and I'm feeling nosey tonight... so how do you tell the good, the bad and the ugly apart? ;) :D

Trimmers are included too. :)

Being a "horse person" as well as a farrier. Being conciousness in their work;willing to keep interested in what they do and keep learning.; turning up on time; not moaning!

A good farrier not only does a bl00dy good job on the horses feet, but tells you what he/she is doing and why, informs you of any problems he/she sees or any they may think will happen, and takes into account the horses lifestyle when talking about shoeing or not shoeing! does not moan overly about the rain/mud tells a good joke, imparts a bit of gossip, and has a sense of humour!!

Oh, and never uses any of his implements against the horse, or threaten to throw owner into a pond if horse bites him!!!!

The love of the horse why else would most of them go into it.Many years ago my old farrier said no problem with the horses it's the sodding owners and in the 40 years of owning horses I've had only 1 bad farrier:(:(, the other 2 had and have been fantastic.:):):):):)

The Farrier I sacked did a lot of things right. He turned up on time, explained things to me, took his time, checked that he was happy his work, made any adjustments that he felt were required and never got cross with the horses.

However, he totally failed to balance the hooves correctly and in hindsight, his explanations to me (RE what was happening with the hooves) were totally flawed.
