I used to prefer geldings and when looking for my first horse I was leaning towards getting a gelding as I didnt want to end up with a mareish mare but then I found my mare and she is wonderful. I agree mares are more of a one person horse. I think I have a great bond with my mare and i've only had her a year.

Before i bought my boy 13yrs ago i was looking for a filly, but they wanted too much money for them,i stumbled across the little bay colt and felt soo sorry for him

,he looked really poor etc,i bought him,lol...absolutely NO regrets and thankful i never bought a filly

,he is the most honest horse i have ever known minus the attitude and seasons

,dont get me wrong i have had a mare and she pulled some faces but she was an absolute sweetheart, would never follow up what the faces said she would do,lol, and she too was honest, but have seen so many since buying my lad that are just high maintenance, and a general pain in the butt!!
Sad thing is sometimes wish my boy was a mare because with his attitude etc could have had a cracking foaly, arghh well cant have it all eh

I'd have a gelding over a mare every time. I can't be bothered with the seasons and the moods.
I don't believe that a mare will try harder for you either - my gelding will try his socks off for me and is just as smart as any mare I've come across.

Always geldings for me too. Ive had a mare (and got one right now) and although I can see they are very intelligent - I just prefer my geldings, I just get on with them better for some reason! I've seen some mares be so damn stroppy when they're in season I just cant be bothered with that. All my geldings have all tried hard for me (bar one).

Doesn't make a difference to me - I suppose mares are only a problem if they get moody or don't perform well when in season - my mare is no different when she is though.
