Hi everyone

I posted a few weeks ago about the four year old i bought back in August with bucking issues!! He then had a major abscess in his hind foot resulting in two months off work. We started work again backing in january with just walk and trot and hacking out and he has been wonderful - a bit reluctant to go forward sometimes in the school but have limited work inthe school. So, this week as we didn't have a buddy to hack out on we took him in the school - my lady that helps me exercise rode him and all was fine until she asked for canter on the left rein and he put in an almighty buck and off she came. She was quite winded and i was so disappointed in him. He seems so suffer from tension with a rider on his back. His back and teeth have been checked, saddle checked etc. he is slightly weak behind so would this cause him to be imbalanced. These arn't playful bucks these are p**s off bucks as his ears go back when asked to go forward. I was hoping to do four year old hunter classes this year as hes a fantastic looking horse but am wondering if this won't be possible. Should I just carry on hacking out three times a week and leave the schooling completely? He doesn't buck on the lunge at all - just the weight of the rider. I was thinking of putting a dummy on his back but have no idea how to make one!! We are not inexperienced but I haven't got much experience of a bucker!!

The other option is to send him away but we have great facilities at home and the lady that rides for me is more than capable.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Many thanks

Have you cantered him out hacking? And if so, does he buck then? He will probably find it a lot easier to canter and balance himself with a rider on board if he is going in more or less straight lines, rather than in an arena.

If as you say they are "ears back get off me" bucks, and if he does it out hacking as well, I would still look for an issue somewhere.

No we haven't tried out on a hack, I suppose because we know he does buck we don't want to fall off and lose him! Hes ok if he falls into canter and its just if you ask him quite firmly! Thank you for your reply.

I much much prefer riding youngsters out in the open than in an arena - as soon as mine are backed and going forward, they go hacking and I avoid the arena as much as possible. Try hacking with a very sensible companion (rider as well as horse

) and, having chosen your suitable place, allow the companion to go quietly into canter and ask your youngster gently to go too. It's much easier to stay on a buck when you have space to go forward into (rather than thinking about getting round the next corner in the arena), so hand onto the neck strap, sit up, and get ready to kick him forward if you think he's going to buck - but I suspect he won't

And let me know how you get on

Ok, well I would stick to straight lines and let him fall in to canter, till he's forward thinking enough to canter by himself and balanced enough to go round the corners of the school. I back all of mine on the yard then straight out hacking, and rarely have any bucking issues.

heres a dummy i made eairler.. note... hes had had to come off, hes feet stayed well in the saddle with arms tied to d rings!
