I was reading the post on the wee JRT fitting and thought I'd share my experience of one of my border terrier's who fits. It started a few years ago one spring when without warning in the middle of the night wee molly started fitting, she tried getting up out her bed but just stumbled about banging into the wall and furnitre, I got the fright of my life thinking that she was dying, it was awful, she eventually calmed down and lay beside me for the rest of the night. I took her to the VET in the morning and he found a tick on her. He said that some dogs are allergic to ticks and this is what happened. She was right as rain again until a couple of weeks later when the same thing happened. I immediately searched her for ticks and found one! I walk the dogs in the country lanes where normally there are cows but over the winter and into spring the farmer keeps sheep in the fields and this is where she was getting them. I check her every day for ticks at this time of year and have found one or two and removed them immediately....no fits

and get her clipped as soon as it's warm enough. I always have a tick remover handy now!!

Deer ticks are a hug problem over here (they carry Lyme Disease in certain areas). I use an all-natural tick spray before we go walking in the dense woods of Connecticut. I used one last summer and not a single tick took up residence in my dog's coat.

Glad to hear your Border is okay after the scare.

you can apply frontline to yor dog and it protects against ticks for one month, however, they have to bite before they are killed and its not instant, can take a few days before the tick falls off, but they do die in around 24 hours.

I used to use tick collars but they are so toxic to the environment I enventually stopped using them as still got the ticks anyway

I think ticks are immune to most chemicals now, I find it just as easy to pluck them off when I find them. Its actually quite therapeutic - my OH and I have races to see who can find the most!

I must say, I do get satisfaction on finding one and plucking it out, yucky little bloodsuckers from hell!!!!
