Following heavy rider thread, anyone worry they're too small for big horse?

My little cousin has ridden Buddy, he went beautifully for her and she got a lovely tune out of him! She won't be 5 stone soaking wet!!

I couldn't ride anything smaller than 15.2 and chunky now, anything fine I just feel unsecure on. need a good set of shoulders to stay on board :p

I don't have an issue with height; however I do find certain shapes difficult. In particular broad backed horses with round barrels.

It also depends on who regularly rides a horse. If the horse is used to a stronger taller rider, then it is less likely to be able to interpret my aids.

Agree with Anglebracket - for me at 5'2" it's the build rather than the height. I'd much rather be on a 16.2 TB than a 15h cob.....as long as the mounting block is a decent height!!

I've gone from 16hh Tb mare to 16.2hh half Shire gelding and the difference is phenomenal. I'm 5' 2". The lad I have had to buy a made to measure as my knees don't reach the saddle flaps and the lower leg moves around too much. Also, feel that my heels/leg length are a little too high to give him the correct aids/pick him up. Although the same -ish height, the sheer difference in build is crazy - she was cob size, he is xxfull.

I've been looking for a new share for a while now, current share is a 16.1hh IDxTB and felt about right on him (I'm 5"4 and about 11st so relatively heavy for my height), but rode a 17.3hh ISH on Monday and loved him! He did feel a bit big (especially when getting off!) but no stronger than my 16.1hh, although I am having a lesson on the big man tomorrow to see what my instructor thinks before I make my final decision!

I feel great on him and he's a gentle giant, I didnt feel like I had to alter my aids at all, only issue was the stirrup leathers were huge and I needed 3 twists (his owner is a rather tall man, although he hasnt ridden in months due to an injury). I bet a lot of people would say I'm too small for him, but because I'm fairly heavy and have very strong legs I dont feel too small when I'm on him.

I've always loved big horses, the bigger the better for me! The majority of my falls have been off ponies, I find them too nippy and uncomfortable to ride, whereas the big boys feel like comfortable armchairs! The main issue I find with the bigger horses is their strength, but if you are used to it and have a good instructor to teach you how to control it then there is no reason why a shorty like me cant ride a big horse!
