Hi guys :) again!
My lad currently gets
baileys no 4 tooling cubes
mug off micro linseed
handfull off hi fi un molassed
equimins advance complete
mag oz
yea sacc

now I'm looking at geting his diet right. Baileys no 4 being cereal based are going to haveto be swapped for something else. Ers pellets or coolstance copra? He needs weight so something that willdo that but safe for barefoot diet.
Any suggestions would be great as the weekend will be time to start swapping onto a better diet for his feet. So what diet would u swap him 2? Or change in his current diet?
Thanks.
Oh x rays thurs by the way. Fingers xd

Non molassed sugar beet would do, although I also use some Fast Fibre and non molassed Dengie chaff for taste and variety. I have not tried copra, never seen it round here.
A tablespoonful of salt too.Calm and Condition would suit you better [Allen & Page]

Oh yes the salt I will start adding.
Fast fibre he won't eat and speedibeet he will eat but does nothing for his weight, so need weight gain feed. He's not keen on mash type feed so nuts etc would be good. The baileys done a grand job so what about topspec condition cubes? How do bare foot horses except them?

being thick now but.. what does the salt do please? dont think i have herd that one before. :p

My lad has the coolstance copra meal and absolutely loves it. If you look on their website you should be able to locate a stockist near you. I'd avoid the hi fi if possible too. Nic at Rockley told me that she uses rolled oats for those in need of weight gain, as well as giving them more of the copra meal than the small amount my lad gets. I'd be very surprised if yours wouldn't eat the copra as it's supposed to be really tasty and certainly in our case disguises the very bitter taste of the cal mag we use.

Hope that helps, shout if you need anything else. :) x

Rolled oats, great because they are cheap but didn't relise they put weight on.
Iv found copra on a website called " 4 dobbin" there is no stockist near me apart from one who iv tried for 2 days to get hold off and left message but can't deal with that.
Ok will leave the hi fi out.
Do u soak your copra? Or leave it dry? What does it look like

ps. I always soaked copra but I believe some feed it dry, I wouldn't myself being the paranoid type. It smells gorgeous.

I would up the linseed to two mugs. It works wonders. Also agree with the post about calm and condition or fast fibre. My girl is a poor doer and sh is on the fast fibre combined with the linseed. Grass pellets are also good if your horse does well naturally on grass.

All 5 of mine are Winergy "low energy" ages 16-1 year they are all as fat as butter, kept their weight on over winter and only my old mare rugged over winter as she is a tbh, but suffers from sweet itch. It's high fibre and have used it for several years so no complaints.

I think you would be very surprised at how well they maintain their weight when you drop cereal feeds for a start.

There are differences in horses....but their gastro intestinal system is all the same. Beet pulp WILL provide adequate calories for a 'normal' horse.

You could try Solution Mash - soya based.

Don't forget - if he is any pain or discomfort then he will be wasting huge amounts of calories to that. Pain is like a leaky reservoir for calories.
Ditto if the gut isn't working efficiently.

I worry about making it too complicated.

Keep it simple and stick with fibre, oil and minerals. Get the hooves more comfortable and therefore the horse more comfortable.

Then the weight will be much less of an issue.

I tend to put a small scoop of copra in the bucket first, mix minerals in and then add water until it's gone fluffy, then I put the sugar beet, linseed etc in afterwards. My boy licks the bucket clean every time, so I'm guessing it must be good :D

Nooooooooooo don't do soya! It is ALL genetically modified in livestock feed.

Please avoid.

Soy and insulin resistance is increasingly clogging up my inbox lately from research from America... Incidentally where they feed most soy.

I have always had a suspicion about soy, coming from Malaysia where we ferment soy before eating as my elders know that they are toxic beans. In Japan, they eat edamame which is soy... But they are immature beans and I have no knowledge if they are GM. I do not take the risk.

I agree cereals are bad but only certain ones. GM soy is, in my humble opinion, has a part to play in modern pathologies in humans as well. Because people don't know the dangers of unfermented soy.

Hey, it's just a warning. Feel free to prove me wrong about soy.

Ers are really good for weight gain and only 7% starch. Calm and condition is 13%. Personally I am not a fan of Allen and page. Baileys outshine and pos cool stance are good too. Quick beat needs to be weighed dry so u can feed a lot more of this than u think which might help. too.

Thanks guys, getting hold off this coolstance is proving a real problem, ERS I can get through work so will go for those with speedibeet and salt, equimins advance and yea sacc with linseed.
Thank you
