ours have been freezing, we've had to go hammer then several times a day as they re-freeze as fast as you can smash them, its v important to remove the 'lumps' of ice or it just freezes quickly again, then we've been taking 6 of the big containers up in 4x4 to refull them! what a pain!

I never had it that bad when I lived in Cambridge.

Aquarium heater inside a piece of plastic drainpipe with holes drilled in it.

Assuming you can get power to the trough.

Have you considered buying one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Isborr.jpg (people who enjoys ice fishing uses them) ? Though I suppose you had to be careful so that you don't drill a hole in the bottom of your through.
