If your horse has got a good soaking during the day say and you want to rug them for the night's turnout Do you pop a rug on whilst their wet or dry them off thoroughly before rugging and turning out?

I would give mine a good sweat scrape first and then rug.

Yes if I have a wicking rug with a warm rug over the top. Would never put a duvet type rug on directly as will cause horse to get cold as rug would stay damp IMO!

ALWAYS dry horse off before ruggin - would put fleece on to dry him and then rug - or if it cold then leave fleece thing on and rug over top !

Now, I said on the other poll I would ride a wet horse, which I would and do, but I wouldn't put a rug on. THis might sound like a strange logic but my reasoning is that a horse being ridden is not going to get cold, and the saddle with only be on for a certain length of time and then off. However, a rug that is giong on over night, if it gets damp, would stay damp, and a stabled/turned out horse is more likely to get cold. So I woudl put a wicking rug on for as long as possible, ideally til they are totally dry, then take that off and put stable/turnout rug on.

As my horse is living out at the moment- if I miss a rain forecast and he gets wet then I put a wicking fleece on to dry him off under a turnout (if still raining) and then once he's dry swop them for a dry turnout rug.

I usually bring Chex in to dry off for a bit, but if I don't have time then the rug has to go on him wet. I wouldn't do it with a lw because he'd get cold, but its fine with anything heavier (providing its breathable). He warms up and dries off, as does the inside of the rug. Never had any problems from doing this.

Chex, Does the cake mean it is your birthday?
Happy Birthday

If its not too cold but wet I sweat scrape and just pop her L/W Rambo on but if it's very cold and wet I'll pop a wicking fleece under her rug too. She is a pretty tough girl and I haven't had problems either. I always thought everyone did this these days with the breathable T/O's, it was different years ago when the old fashioned NZ were the only option

but thats just me the weather atm seems to be warm and wet so its hard to tell what to do so i have decided better safe than sorry she can survive with out any rugs tbh anyway. But i guess if you need to rug the horse for what ever reason i would make sure that they were bone dry even if it ment that i spend a long time but thats just me

I ALWAYS dry them off before rugging. If my boy comes in wet and shivvering (the only time I would rug him), then I stand him somewhere dry, give him a good towel drying, throw a mesh sweat rug on him with a summer sheet on top. If he's stood outside, then I'll throw his turnout rug on top of those. Leave him to munch on a haynet for 30-45 mins, remove rugs and give him a last towel dry, then rug up with his rug for the night.

It doesn't take much to dry them off.
