How did your dog get it's pet name?

All our dogs are named after my grandas old gundogs

I actually owned the original Cindy and Tina for a while (although Cindy was the older one and Tina was her daughter, and funny the first Tina got cataracts as well, just like my now Tina:)) as my granda died suddenly at the age of 45 so we gave them a home, as my granny couldn't cope with them. (They were v.old by this stage. Cindy was deaf, Tina totally blind. They lived happily with us and got PTS together one evening, they could never be apart)

The original Windsor was also a black lab, but sadly hung himself jumping over a fence

We had a Sheila who was a ESS and then my uncle called his dog Sheila.

Then the original Tess was an ESS, however as I wasn't going to be getting a ESS, I called my mini schnauzer Tess (aka The Beast) as wanted to keep the tradition going

My first dog (a whippet) was named Isobel after Richard II's wife, as we were doing Richard II for A level English at school. My second whippet was called Sian after someone my first ex-husband worked with

Since then my dogs have been Macallan, Jura, Talisker, Port Ellen and Islay.... I am lazy, so it is easy to follow a theme

We named the ol collies after family members!! Apart from socks - his name was because he has socks.

Scruffy's name is pretty self explanitory, little sh!t hates getting groomed. We were going to call him Neeps originally however much of a neep he is, it didn't quite suit him.

We usually lean towards popular culture - we had two named after characters in The Sweeney, a couple named after characters from the Irish RM and some named after singers or pop groups.
Our last girl and the two we have now arrived with their names and while they wouldn't have been my choice it would have been cruel to change them.

My mum once sold a lovely boy (GSD, very much a male) called Zep - the lady renamed him 'Jewell' - cringe!

Our first dog, the kindest GSD that's ever lived, was named Kayleigh after my parents' favourite Marillion song

Our old Lab was bought for my tenth birthday (albeit six months early!) and was named China for two reasons - one was that her breeder used to call all her brood bitches 'me old China', and also, we were listening to T'pau's China In Your Hand when trying to think of a name! In a bizarre twist of fate, China's Kennel Club name is actually Hercwood Kayleigh, which we did not know until she came home with us! When China had puppies, when we registered them we gave them all Chinese names followed by the English translation....we had Huanghe Yellow River, for example. And the only bitch in the litter, who we kept, was named India as her normal name, but is registered as Zhongua Little China

Stella is for Stella Dubois, from "A Streetcar Named Desire". And no, my Stella is not a drunk nor a victim, but we figured that Stella was a ballsy name, and could well imagine shouting it--a la Marlon Brando--at the top of our lungs. And we were right

Darcy means 'dark one' in Irish - and she is originally from Ireland so it's perfect for her. That and the fact that it is pretty like she is

.

[/ QUOTE ]

It literally translates into 'Descendant of the dark one'
