I appreciate everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I was shocked that requesting extra video and or photo's was considered to be described as time wasting.

I wish prior to yesterdays viewing I had seen some video it would have saved everyones time.

If you were travelling hours to see a horse would you have wanted to see the horse perform albeit on video before you travel, ie jump, flat work etc.

Or am I away with the fairies:)

And if you were a seller would you mind providing such information ?

I am with you on this on.

If the horse was down the road, I would just get in the car and see it. However, I have travelled hours to find the horse does not have the paces or jump I am looking for and this could have been ascertained by a video before viewing. In one or two cases I actually didnt even sit on the horse as I was not going to buy it so didnt see the point = V big waste of time for everyone.

I think some people are of the view that if they can get you there, then you will obviously fall in love for said horse and overlook its failings.

I now will definately try and request a video and one or 2 conformation shots if travelling 3 hours or more and I am definately not a time waster!!

When selling, I too would rather send out a video so save me spending hours getting the horse ready for them to take one look and go horse isn't for me! I think this gets rid of some of your viewing time wasters.

Thanks for your replies, I do think it cuts down wasting everyone's time, and yes if you were only 30 mins up the road then its easy to jump in the car and have a look.

My friend is waiting for video for a horse that will be a 6 hour round trip and at the moment they are not forth coming, it is for particular discipline, so I guess she won't be making the journey on a written description.

I just didn't want to making the request for further information if it was considered by the majority to be a form of time wasting.

If i was only going 30 mins down the road to see a horse i wouldn't be too bothered but any longer and i would want as many oictures and videos as possible, competition records and i would do my own research on who knows it first.

lol hence my reply reply on other thread. I don't think it's time wasting at all. Sellers should be prepared to send videos and pics etc.

Living in Cornwall my life is now a lot easier where pictures and video can be emailed. It saves an awful lot of wasted time of both the buyer and seller to at least get an idea of type, paces and jump before travelling. I don't mind travelling as long as needed (I think 9hrs is record) but it is so much easier if I know to start with I like the basics. If it is 30 minutes away that is different but otherwise pictures / video / recommendation is a must.

When i was selling my last pony i was happy to email as many photos as they wanted. he was a tricky pony and i would much rather them see what he is like than drive down to see him and not like him at all...
When i went to view my current horse we didn't see any photos and he was perfect! it was through a friend as she had ended up in hosp. and the owner was a nurse! lol
but i wouldn't think people asking for more vids/pics is being timewasting?

I don't think you're time wasting by asking for photos/videos at all - I asked for photos and asked 100s of questions before going to visit my new boy - I think the owner expected it of me too - Once I visited, ten mins sat on him and I arranged for him to be delivered within a few days - so no time wasted at all as I knew what I was going to see before I got there - Having said that - I've spent time and money on travelling 100s of miles to view horses which quite frankly were not as advertised! :(

I'm selling my yearling colt and have links to my videos and pictures all ready sorted for any enquirers. They're not fancy or professional but they give you a good idea of what you'll see. If you don't like, don't travel seems an obvious choice and doesn't waste anyone's time.
I think if you're not prepared in this day and age to send pic's and videos then you're not really serious about selling.

So that does beg the question, how many people, when they're organising to sell a horse, make sure they have a full set of pics - both sides, head on, from behind, of anything unusual/questionable etc. - and videos of the horse doing whatever it's being sold to do?

I know it's often trickier than people think to get decent photos and videos of a horse, which is why they're not always available on demand (rider away, arena hire difficulties, inclement weather etc.) but I don't think, these days, you can really do without. In fact a decently produced package should be a real selling point for a horse in this market.

Is it that people think if they're honest about a horse, it will actually put people off and feel that if people come to see it "in person", they'll want it. To be honest, I think there's something to this - so many people end up buying a horse they don't really set out to look for in the first place, because they see it/sit on it and "fall in love".

It would be so much easier if the horse was packaged to sell with all the appropriate photo's and video's. I guess most people have access to a video and camera.

Its when the above is asked for and its not forth coming it begs the question is it not as described and the truth will be out if seen on footage.

It is a buyers market out there I think and I think a nicely presented sales package of your horse makes it stand out above the rest.

My other thought on this would be if it was so expertly done, is the seller more like a trader than a private individual.:p

So, in other words, you can't win for trying. ;)

I do think that's part of it. On the other thread, you have the person being taken to task for wearing a body protector, yet if people want comp photos/footage and that person always wears one to compete, which is a perfectly valid personal choice . . .

Or if someone has good footage and pics ready to go then people think they're being "slick" or the horse is "over priced" (whatever that means - horses are worth what people will pay for them) . . .

I think part of it is many buyers LIKE things to be a little "rustic" - they want to think they're seeing a diamond in the rough and getting more than they're paying for. They want to tell their friends they've produced a horse from "nothing" or been able to spot potential and not had to pay for someone else to spot it first and produce the horse for sale. It's an old horseman's joke that if you've got a horse to sell, stick it in a paddock near the yard and throw some mud on it, then point it out in an off hand manner as something they buyers wouldn't be interested in. ;) :D

I may be playing Devil's Advocate a bit, but it entertains me that when people are selling a horse it should just sell itself as it's so wonderful, and yet when they're looking then the seller - and the horse - should jump through hoops. ;)

Hi, I have not read all the replies so apologise if repeating...
I was shocked that requesting extra video and or photo's was considered to be described as time wasting.
It depends. Fundamentally (IMO) it is down to the cost of the horse, if a horse was very cheap then personally, as a seller, I would think someone wanting to see countless photos/videos of say a 1500 horse would probably be a time waster.
If the horse is more expensive (I'm not talking tens of thousands, say >=4k) then personally, as a seller I would have one ready anyway as I don't want to waste my own time showing someone something they are just not interested in. If you approached me for video/photos I wouldn't see it as a big deal at all.

Just wanted to add, I agree with Tarrsteps- IMO a good sales package is invaluable - even if just to show pics of what a nice tail it has ;)

I would be tempted to say that nowadays taking photos/video is so simple everyone selling should have this done before the advert goes live. It's not difficult, it's not time consuming and it helps buyers, so hopefully the horse can find a better home.

Well, I think it would be pure madness not to request a video! Most of the people I know have bought their dressage horses in Germany, no way somebody is going to book flights, hotels, take time off work etc without having even seen a video before hand.

Let's just say that words like 'super paces' can mean VERY different things according to different people :)

Whilst waiting for said video the horse has now been sold, oh well I just couldn't afford to travel over 200 miles round trip without seeing more than just a photo.

It just wasn't meant to be;)

Last time I sold a horse I made him a Photobucket account that had about 20 photos and videos in it. Not a lot of effort and you could put the link in Horsemart advert.

You see Tarrsteps I'm after better paces than my current pocket rocket:D, I need to see it move before I travel, but the vids just don't seem forth coming.

dieseldog- That is a fantastic idea, I wish there were more like wise people selling, it would make it so much easier and quicker to buy.

I'm off to view a horse tomorrow unseen, recommendations from word of mouth, but is local so not really wasting my time as such, its a Draycott House just across the road from parents, so if all else fails Its a stop off for a cuppa and chocolate :D
