My first horse was a bargain, less than the price of a couple of good nights out, so I just stayed in ! When he died I rode various friends horse for the following 18months, put the money I would have ordinarily spent on livery into a savings account, then bought a posh horse with the proceeds.
Bank of mum and dad have paid for all my horses!!!! (they are fab!!!)
Has meant was able to buy my lovely mini cooper (on finance!!) which i will be payin off for the next 2 years!
I bought mine after saving up for several years in order to do it. She cost me £2750 but I wanted to have more than that available for any emergancies so it took a while to get it all together, especially as I was a working pupil for some of the time!
I'm kinda proud though cos I really did save hard and wait a long time to be able to buy a horse of my own.
Cash savings - never use Credit Cards unless absolutely necessary (bought new saddle when old one didn't fit and needed it quick) - never had a loan other than mortgage and couldn't afford one now if I wanted one!
Saved for three years and bought him cash. Took so long so that I could allow £2k extra for extras like tack and rugs, and also to keep a couple of thousand aside for emergencies. Kinda wished I'd saved a bit longer towards a horsebox now
But then I wouldn't have my lovely boy so life would be very dull indeed!
I spent 6 months working as an undergrad tutor for £40 per hour doing 2 hours a week. I put it away in a savings account and the plan was to use it as a base to save up for a horse I really wanted. Anyway the horse I had on loan at the time (Ally) although he was fun his owner was a nightmare. So instead of sitting it out with her I blew my meagre pot of savings on Spring instead of waiting another year till I had enough for a decent horse!
My mum and dad bought Gin for me as they were paying for my brothers uni accomodation and thought it only fair to give me the money for Gin.
They lent me half of the money for my horsebox too but I dont have to pay that back until I start my new job.
I would never have a loan for a horse, I prefer to buy everything outright.
