My horse has been lame for two weeks. Nothing obvious wrong just 1/10ths lame on hard in straight line but worse on a circle on the hard. Better on a surface.

Vet immediatly suspected due to her feet - very typical flat thoroughbred feet. Farrier came today and fitted shoes with quarter clips and wedges. If I can post a picture later tonight of her feet can anyone comment for me on what they look like?

Are there any resident farriers on here?

She has very collapsed heels - apparently just her conformation. Farrier is not suggesting the wedges long term, just over the summer to give her heels a chance to improve but after reading posts on here they can make the problem worse?

Ask your farrier if he can show you before and after pictures showing improved hooves after a period in wedges ....

And do some googling about how wedges left on too long (over the summer? Until mid September??) cause contracted tendons, which can then tear when the wedges are removed.

Get a new farrier or trimmer?

My boy had wedges and it was a total disaster! it made his heels even more collapsed, when you think about it, raising the heels puts even more pressure on them and squashes them further! the big problem was coming out of them, farrier decreased the height very gradually 2mm at a time but even that made him lame :-( I hate to say it but my boy was only 1/10th lame on straight and 2/10th on a circle, turned out after MRI that he had a collateral ligament strain. Only thing that worked for us was barefoot, he now is sound and has fab feet. Good luck, but please try not to go down the wedges route, it's a nightmare.x
