Following on from breed thread...what 'type' of person owns arabs then?

I noticed going through the 'Breeds you Hate' thread that a fair few people said they didn't hate arabs as such, but were put off them by the type of person who was likely to own one.

I don't understand really.....I reckon I'm relatively normal;)....

Can I use a disclaimer as I dont 'do' arab showing?:D

So go on then.....what stereotypical person owns an arab?

I won't be offended as I'm - as far as I can see- a bog-standard 'normal' horse owner who generally smells of horse-wee and looks a bit unkempt ( out of work hours, obviously) who just happens to like Arabs as opposed to say, TB's or whatever.

Blame it on those blimmin' Jinny books when I was growing up:rolleyes:
 
Dunno, I'd love one, but sadly I can't look at them because they are too small for DH and his stupid long legs!!!

Rode a couple of super ones when I was a teenager.

ETS: I loved the jinny books too, and when I was about 14/15 rode a chestnut arab mare with a flaxen mane and tail.........
 
the typical arab owner is a person who likes arabs? i dont think there is any type of person its just a personal preference. personally i wouldnt want an arab myself as i prefer natives & cobby types, but i wouldnt say i am stereotypical of a person who would like one of them either. sorry pointless rambling.

I have an anglo-arab and an arab filly.

I am disabled (spinal injury due to riding accident) and my mare has looked after me for many years, some of that in horrendous traffic. She knows if I'm in pain and goes into 'dobbin' mode. :rolleyes: She can be a twit but she's never ever scared me and we've escorted nervous riders and novice horses many times.

My filly is wonderful, calm and brave. She will be professionally backed at four and hopefully I will be able to ride her. If she's too much for me I will find a rider/sharer and keep her as she is so rewarding to own.
 
Well, i would like to refute the claim that there is a certain type of person who owns them. But after my first national arab show (spectator, i don't show) last month i'm affraid that a lot of people there seemed to fit the steroetype. It's a bitchy old world. There are a lot of normal people who just love their horses like anyone else does though.

But i'm another who just always smells of horse wee, with hay in my hair and mud on my work trousers. And arabs are the only horses for me. So we're not all snobs. They're the ultimate performance, do anything, go anywhere horse and they do it all with so much gusto and grace. :D
 
Me Too!!! I have a pure bred Crabbet and an Anglo (Crabbet) I love em to death and again am pretty normal (OK thats debatable:P ) My blacksmith once said my Arabs were the only ones he liked, and the reason he usually disliked them was because they were owned by very ditzy people who liked pretty things to sit on which rubbed off on the horses and made them ditzy too!

If you read the thread 'whats your favourite breed' the Arabs came out top here too. I think people love em or hate em, theres not a lot in between
 
what about me

17 year old graphic design student, non horsey family... yet I own a 8 year old pure bred who I have owned for 2 years bought him as a complete nutty stallion who had done nothing apart from inhand showing... bought him on my self, I show him, jump him, dressage him hunt him... trained him completely alone in a field no fancy menage or anything just love


he's very loved... my best friend in the whole entire world, couldn't live with out him such a special boy... so very kind and gentle and you will never meet a more loyal and intelligent breed!!! they show so much affection and just amazing so understanding

Heres my lad, he's perfect in every way possible (although I wish his damn mane would grow ;) hahah)

Yeah- I guess they are a 'marmite' breed.

I like them because they are a bit like driving a sports car- compared to OH's mare which is like sitting astride a wardobe with the turning circle of the QE2.:eek:

I do really like our highland too- he is very graceful in his own way, more like a Mini than a Spitfire;)

ETS....at 15hh, I like to know I can get back on if I have an 'unplanned dismount'
 
wow, he's gorgeous! Just the type i love, fairly stock, short coupled and with a fabulous shoulder! Plus, it's good to see an arab jumping.

Mine is only 5 and very green - he's a bit of a blank canvass really- all the basics are there. I really want to jump him, and loads of people have said 'Oh- arabs can't jump you know'.

Utter *******s.
 
I really want to own an arab who can jump when i eventually get my own horse.

I love jumping, but every time i look at an arab for sale they are used for dressage/endurance/showing blah blah blah......

Hopefully i'll find one when it comes to getting my own horse :)
 
The thing with it is that its MY perception not reality!

My perception is that arab owners are flighty and a bit neurotic... Please note the MY PERCEPTION bit as I know I am utterly wrong I just have this thing in my head that will not unstick.

I loved the Jilly books too... Still have them in my parents attic!!!

Oh and my first horse was a liver chestnut anglo arab whom I adored!

People don't think arabs jump because many 'aren't' jumped (not CAN'T) but there's are LOADS out there and when they jump they are superb... look at the springs arabs have in there step, well thats only the tip of the jump ;)

And best of all they will never get tired, the perfect little nippy event horse, fantastic paces, beauty and enjoyment for dressage, great desire, determination, speed and endurance for cross country and the power, carefulness and respect for show jumping

They are in my eyes the perfect horse
 
I guess its because many people that buy them use them for showing, dressage, endurance etc because thats what they are generally bred for, but i am determined to find an awesome jumper one day :) There are obviously some great jumping arabs out there!

Although i am not an arab owner (yet!) if i ever do own one i wouldn't say that i would fit the stereotype, i'm quite a chilled out person.

Maybe its a case of sometimes people can look like their horses, like some dog owners look like their dogs, which is where the petite, pretty and skinny stereotype comes from, lol! :rolleyes:
 
Ohhh.... the type of person that should own an arab hmmmm....

'They should always look immaculate, be very slim (infact look a bit like barbie) have neat I just left the hairdressers hair, there make up should always be immaculate and wear bright red lip stick, be very rich, be a bit naurotic, drive nice cars, and ride on a sunday'

hmmmmm..... or NOT!!

I own a wonderful arab mare who I owe my childhood too, I had her at 10 years (I was 10 she was 5!) she's a 15hh eygption/spanish grey mare. We did pony club, teams, xc, sj and dr. We showed (locally, I found it a bit boring as did she!) we hunted up until last season, she would jump anything including 5 bar gates hedges etc, We did endurance upto 40miles.

So she has been owned by a naughty pc child, a distruptive teenager, and now a normal hard working adult. (all in me!)

Arab's dont need a 'type' of person, they are lovely people if peple only gave them a chance!

A saying 'Ride an arab, you will never want anything else!'

Lovely boy, and good to see one doing a bit of everything. They really are the ultimate allrounder. And as hardy as a native too!

The chestnut mare I used to ride had a super jump, the grey one not so much but that was purely lack of schooling because she was very green. But they are very willing and quick learners.
 
A woman a new some years ago had an arab. They were so well matched it was funny. They were both very highly strung, both had shrill voices and both thought they knew everything. I didn't like her or her horse - LOL
 
Obi (98% Crabbet) is my first horse. My father (equi-phobic) bought him as a four year old for me without even taking him out of the stable!

19 years on and he is the best friend anyone can ever have.

He is breath-takingly beautiful, proud, noble, grumpy and opinionated but trustworthy and people orientated.

He has a legion of fans (even Arab haters) and he has always got me home safe.

I love all horses but nothing can (for me) match the beauty, intelligence and pride of the Arab. To love them - you must understand them.

I am a common northener who works full-time+ to afford my horses. I could afford my dream car and holidays were it not for my horses but instead I prefer to lean on his door, watch him eat and heal my toubled soul in the evenings.

I think as many different types of people own arabs as do any other breed - its just that we got on one and didn't want to get off... :)

My first horse is (now 27 and retired after a very successful endurance career) an anglo. Prior to him I had mainly ridden TB's as an adult and I still love the combination. My home-bred 4yo that I am now riding is part-bred by my high % crabbet stallion from a TB x mare and I am getting that perfect (for me!) feel again. Here he is playing on holiday as a 3yo:

Not me on him by the way. I don't conform to the slim, young etc stereotype (although I can manage neurotic on occasion) so I found a friend who does :D
 
Well my Sister and I have a 6 year old bay purebred Arab had him since he was 2, was entire until he was 4 and has never given us a day's trouble he is the sweetest easiest horse I have ever met and he loves people, we also have a Warmblood mare so dont just do Arabs I like many breeds.

I am not highly strung or neurotic the complete opposite I am very laid back and calm, dont wear red lipstick either:D I have always loved them, I think they make the best riding horse they are comfortable to ride and very responsive, I have ridden a few that would not be suitable for the faint hearted but I love that about them you cant just sit there and pretend to ride, But if you ask correctly and nicely they will do anything for you.
