A Vet inour area couldnt be bothered to attend a colic on sat eve. Told the owner to feed 3 packs of polo's and horse should be fine.
Luckily for the horse it was, However owner now offers this advice to anyone who's horse has colic.
So far no-one has taken her up!

Anyone else tried this treatment?!

I know that large amounts of polos can have a slight laxative effect of humans, but that coming from the mouth of a vet is just ludicrous. o_0

It would have to of been sugar free polos for it to have the laxitive effect, as its the xylitol (sp?) that causes the "looseness"!!

I would actually report that vet for blumming negligence!

The vet should be reported immediately to the Royal College (of Veterinary Surgeons) - it's a serious case of negligence/dereliction of duty. It was very, very lucky that the horse recovered. The vet could have been sued into oblivion and struck off (and rightly so).

Vets can have an appalling attitude to Colic, when Jack was in acute pain and we were all insisting to the vet it wasn't normal colic, he just drove off and told us to call him in a few hours when he had got to his feet, then when I lost it and called him back after another hour of agony for Jack he said he was in surgery and couldn't come out for about 3 hours, thank god I called another vet, who was there in 20 mins had jack on his way to Langford after about 40 mins, sometimes we know better, we deal with the horse day in day out and know if something is not right

Terrible...I hope they don't get charged for the vet's 'advice'.
What an awful attitude...glad the horse was ok...and really hope no-one takes the person seriously now quoting this as treatment for colic.

Glad someone mentioned about the laxative effect only from sugar-free ones..I eat loads of my horses polos and was starting to get a bit worried...i only eat the full-fat ones!!!

That's awful - but - mint especially peppermint, is a good thing for stomach problems/upsets, so, in this case, it just may have helped. I'd still get a new vet though!
