.... was just wondering how people felt about a crowing cockeral and whether you would be bothered by it?

We live in the country and have 4 close neighbours and 3 other houses about 400 metres away, and we all live on a fairly busy road.

The cockeral is kept in the coop until 7.30am at which point he comes out and will crow for about 10 mins and will then do a few crows during the day usually just rounding his girls up etc. The coop is kept back from the houses about 100m and you can just about hear him when he is in the coop crowing if our windows are open. All the other houses are no nearer and most are considerably further away from the coop / noise than we are.

I am really worried about whether he would be classed as a nuisance. I have spoken to 6 out of the 7 houses and they have either said they cant hear him paricularly or that they actually like it (its part of the countryside). The other neighbour (and one of the closest!)we have been having ongoing feud with as he keeps 9 dogs in kennels at the bottom of his garden, about 10m from ours and he walks them twice a day once abpout 6am and then again between 5 - 8pm. They bark at every noise from our garden, have chased the chickens on our property and do wake us up EVERY morning.

Would you think that we have a bit of a cheek complaining about his dogs barking unreasonably when we have a cockeral?

We have a cockerel next door to us who starts early but it doesn't bother us. Probably because our 3yr old daughter usually wakes us up way before the cockerel ever gets a chance! I wouldn't worry about complaining about his dogs. They sound way more annoying than your cockerel!

Your cockrel sounds fine so I don't think I would have a problem. However I used to live next door to a family who had about 3 cockrels and hens in tiny little pens and one would start crowing at about 4 in the morning and then they would all compete against each other and literally crow non stop until mid morning. It used to drive me insane but the neighbours were very strange and there wasn't anything I could do about it.

we've got a cockeral about 400 yds down the road from us - he happily starts crowing at dawn!!

have to say I could happily turn him into Sunday lunch some mornings but just view it as part and parcel of country life.

9 barking dogs however, I would have a problem with. I worry when my GSD barks at our yard cats in the early hours but no one else seems to be bothered and it isn't a regular persistant noise problem like you have to put up with.

I think it depends on your neighbours. We used to have 2 cockerels, and our next door neighbour liked them (one was v pretty) and didn't hear them (her hearing isn't too good). We live on the edge of town and the estate is very close, there's 2 fields between them and us. About 3 or 4 months AFTER we despatched them, a friend of mine on the estate was talking chickens with her neighbour, who said she hoped they wouldn't be getting a cockerel as she was getting woken far to early by our one, and it was a nuisance and she was going to complain to the council!
