It costs as much as much as any other horse LOL

Well like with any horse it depends if you want grass, DIY, part or full livery.

Also depends if the horse is healthy, you cant forsee injuries and vets bills, so impossible to say.

My horses cost me each:

My livery for the year per horse is: £970 (for DIY)
Farrier: £290
Worming: up to £100
Insurance: £400
Tack, equpment etc: £1000
Rugs: £200
Hay: £50
Shavings £100

That doesnt include any unforseen expenses.

Agreet thats its probably the same for any horse, apart from competition fees. At a rough calculation Mines costs per year about:

livery - 1080, that grass in summer and DIY in winter
shoes - £300
insurance - £120 (I have cheap veteran insurance
wormer - £50
feed - £50 - no feed in summer

Can't think what I've forgotten...

My livery for the year per horse is: £480 (for Grass)
Farrier: £630
Worming: up to £100
Insurance: £400
Tack, equpment etc: £1000
Rugs: £200
Hay: £50
Supplements:£400
Jabs ets £100 (cant remember!!)

It can vary , for me DIY is:

unlimited grazing, mine live out 24/7 but I have my own stable which I keep a bed down in just in case.

In winter unlimited haylege in included in the livery price, in summer if you want hay, just to give horse something to snack on inside, its £2.50 a bale.

I bought my own shavings for £60 for a very deep bed, just going to deep litter as they are hardly in.

also get locked tack room, feed room, and use of school and XC course.

Works out at £15 per week in summer, £22 in winter, bargain!

For me, DIY means you get a stable, grazing and all haylage and straw - but you do everything yourself. My grass livery is just a field, think its £5 extra if you want a stable throughout the summer. My DIY is £30 a week, and grass/summer livery is £15

This is roughly how much mine cost on DIY livery:
livery - £1000
hay - £250
shavings - £250
feed - £250
farrier - £500
insurance - £350
On top of this you have wormer, vets bills, tack, rugs etc.

DIY livery includes a stable, turnout and use of facilites but you have to do eveything yourself. Some yards include hay/haylage, shavings/straw and feed.

My livery for the year per horse is: £728 (for DIY)
Farrier: £260
Worming: up to £100
Insurance: £360
Tack, equpment etc: £Skys the limit!
Rugs: Budget £150 year
Haylage: £300
Shavings £350
Annual Vax/rasp: £60
Mentax Med Supplement: £300
Hard Feed:£200

£2808 Year
or £234 a month

plus little extras !

I think the most important thing to do is to ask around. Alot of different people have VERY different ideas on HOW they wish to keep their horse/s not just where. For example some yards have a rough and ready approach where they dont mind the horses having 24/7 grazing in the summer and out for as long as possible in the winter. I understand however that it is hard at some yards to have a large amount of turnout in the winter due to ground condition but as far as im concerned no land should be overgrazed and all ground can be controlled. I'd definatly advise asking to see the likely field YOUR horse would be put in. Obviously keeping your horse out is cheaper but would need to be assesed for hardieness!! ha
Mind you my cob is like a yettie and im still greatfull that i can bring him in to 'give him a rest from the cold' ha ha

wow, you guys my horse costs me loads more! Livery is £3600 a year (full livery all bedding etc included)
£384 a year insurance
£180 for cortaflex supplement per year
£2080 on lessons per year (two lessons a week at £20 per lesson)
£60 on wormers a year
£60-70 feed a year
£300 competition entries/affiliation fees etc per year
£300 approx on tack/rugs etc
So i spend a year on Shadow alone .....£6974 so basically about seven thousand. Wow ive never thought about it, its a lot. No wonder im always poor!

okay, now I am presuming you will be looking at the cheapest to keep?
If so then get something that can live out all year round, perhaps a native pony. It works out slightly cheaper than a bugger more finely bred animal, but only because you need slightly less feed and not so many rugs.

basics what you'll need can set you back more than the pony. I have learnt this from bitter experience. If I added up the amount i had spent on stuff for our 'happy hacker' it would make me weep.

grass livery @ 20pw

hay@ 2.50 a bale (should last a week, maybe less) or haylage if needed.

feed @ 5 a bag.

farrier @ 20 trim, 50 shoes every 6-8 weeks.

insurance @ 20 month.

vets call out fee (which you will need more than you think) @ 40 a time + anything else the vet does.

wormer @ 5 to 15 a time.

Then, all the little extras. fly sprays, rugs (and this is usually a constant thing as they wreck them), tack, saddlery, grooming paraphanalia, etc etc etc.
