See post / thread top of page 2 - can I ride him - what do you think those of you that have / are experiencing this? It is the most wonderful weather and a bank hol and I am BORED!! Thanks.
since you have moved no doubt his feet and himself have improved as now oyu out off the boggy situation
go here for advice and show piccys of your horses feet at all angles -- www.horseshoes.com
its full of farriers and a farrier site to help horses owners
its free
it takes about a year for a horse feet to grow from top to bottom
i suspect the chips that you encounted were due to the boggy stuff in previous yard, now moved his feet should have harden abit
so can i ride - i would take the boy for a walk only
as that wont hurt him, and call a farrier to access the situation now- as his feet could possibale have harden a lot more since his move- which is great for you
but i am not a farrier- he seems such a nice sort
should think hes got big feet to, feed oil into his diet
and biotin into his diet, dont use hoof oil on his feet as ita comestic and the feet cant breath if you get a huge bottle of veggie oil out of teso can do three things can put in his diet
can put on his feet as its not a cosmetic as no additives in it
and can warm up to finger hot and oil you tack tahts a huge saving on some of the products sold
and i have been doing this for over 30yrs
same to with a cheap furntiure polish has the same ingredients as canter coat shine- atwe lll below price and oyu find that top notch yards comptition riders dealers alike all use pledge or simular aslo detangles tails
that and baby oil for manes and tials if have sweet ich as you surgested as i have a horse with sweet- itch
moisterises the mane and tail and helps to keep it on tip top condition so ther you go plenty of home products to use at half the cost for your horse to use
thank you goeslikestink ive been sitting here patiently waiting for a reply whilst itching to go and see him. i am definitely going to use the polish and baby oil tips too, my partner says no to this but in going to overrule! can i school him for a very short while? i figure its a nice deep sandschool and should be ok? so gutted as its a wonderful day for hack to pub but alas will be a traitor and ride another horse this weekend. thanks again and have a great day. im less stressed now i know its more common / not my fault.
You'd be better off going out for a ride; sand can be very abrasive to horses feet.
For poor feet I wouldn't put much stock in many hoof ointments; best feeding from within. A good balanced diet with a supplement of Biotin should help his feet. I used to use Farriers Formula and I found this to be wonderful however with feeding 20-odd horses it was proving way too expensive for me so I did some research and found the black sunflower seeds had most of the minerals and nutrients I was looking for; they are also very high in oil content, which is so much better and more digestible than packaged oil as it is unrefined obviously.
thanks, i just did a wee bit in the school purely cos my father in law drives 2hrs over just to "have a go" and what a star my boy was, he is learning to jump at the moment, we only did 2 each reign but it brightened everyones day, including mine. i got there and he had been sleeping in his stable, a friend got photos for me so at least i know he is settled whilst im keeping him in out of the flies for a few hours a day, weird horse prefers wind and rain to sun and sky! will be getting biotin tomorrow, brave a small little hack (fields only) then hopefully get farrier out tuesday fingers crossed.
