Since a lot of you said that you didn't like the articles because they felt a bit repetitive, I was wondering, what articles would you be interested in reading about?
ditto normal riders who have overcome problems ie the fab one with Rosie.
Basically more stuff for the happy hacker or even those who don't own horses. magazines seem to assume all riders want to compete and have an endless supply of money and time.
And competitions which don't always have prizes of bloody lessons on your own horse or feed. What about a corse of lessons at a normal RS on THEIR horse as a prize?
I used to buy all the horse magazines, but now only get Your Horse, as I find it's more aimed towards the average rider. But even that's gone downhill lately with too much emphasis on private lessons and schooling stuff, which normal riders really are not interested in really. I love the bits in it about normal people, and their normal horses, but that's about it. I might stop my subscription next time round. Also their for sale bit seems to have all but disappeared, and too many pages taken up by buisness ads.
I love magazines and used to buy them all but found that it was just the same articles repeated in each one and far too much focus on "natural horsemanship"
I now only get HORSE and H&H. I think I would buy a more specialised mag like Eventing in place of H&H if/when I start competing.
I would like more "how to" articles aimed at the average rider - we don't all have access to x-country course, full set of SJs and indoor arena etc.
Informative articles on things like how to fit/check the fit of tack & equipment, different kinds of bits, supplements and feeds etc.
Also more articles on western. It's the fastest growing equestrian sport in the UK but it barely gets a mention.
More basic stuff! Like others have said, articles aimed at happy hackers, schooling whilst hacking, schooling ideas for leisure riders. Articles on feeding, never seems to be much on this? I tend to buy 'Your Horse' as I prefer it, but I love the bits about 'normal' people and their 'normal' horses!
Actually what really turns me off is the sell sell sell products approach - I know it's the advertising that helps support the magazine but I hate cheesy models put together into 'eventing', 'jumping' 'showing' outfits that are usually really really naf.
Would love to see more about showing (suprise suprise) and I enjoy reading product comparisions.
I find horse magazines so basic. I compete a fair bit but always looking to improve. I used to get Horse & Rider but it annoys me so much as so Parelli and hacking based. I am not interested in these things. They used to have fab articles about improving things, lessons and scientific stable management but this has gone down the tube.
I would love to see more interviews with top riders and up and coming riders. Would also like more in depth articles on how to tackle every day problems - like moody mares, mud fever, flies, stable boredom those sorts of things, as a lot of the time they mention them but don't actually have a full blown article that tackles the problem and gives loads of advice on what to do/what products are best to use etc.
I like seeing products 'tried and tested' and rated out of 10 as there are so many different things about it's difficult to know what to use!
With the competitions - drives me nuts when they offer things like tickets to Badminton or lessons with a top rider because all of these are based in ENGLAND! Us Scots miss out! They need to offer things which apply to everyone, I like the competitions for winning a saddle or rugs etc.
I think the only real reason I read the magazine is to catch up on any news and I like reading about new products / testing etc. I dont really bother with the articles unless they're specifially of interest to me.
I'd like to see articles for drivers, including goods, methods and training for ponies, which are so often used for driving.
Articles on donkeys would be great too.

what she said ^
.
Not everyone knows everything about horses, and especially since i came back into equestrianism things have changed alot. We used to have just paper, straw or shavings for bedding, and TBh i wouldnt have the faintest idea how to lay a bed with any of this new stuff. So articles on basic stable management and lots more on first aid, ie what to look for in laminitis, mud fever etc with pics, because most mags don't even touch on these.
The win the horse comps really irk me, as they're really looking for someone who will give them good publicity, which isnt fair on those who want to enter just to have the chance of owning a happy hacker.
Pretty pictures of horsies! Seriously all I look at in magazines now is the pictures as I've generally read it all before so am bored of them now. When I was a kid I used to love the gorgeous horse posters you could get in magazines like 'horse and pony' and 'H+P'. People like Bob Langdrish as amazing photographers so it would be nice to have large versions of their works on display. Or do an article on an equine artist like me and display lots of my pictures so i can get lots of business (ha ha, ok i'll shut up now!).
It would be nice to have more varied articles, for example on endurance riding, showing, driving, vaulting, RDA, hunting, cross country, some of the disciplines that don't get covered very much as most mags seem to focus mainly on dressage and showjumping.
Educational articles too on things like feeding, health, anatomy, injuries etc.
Yeah following on i think maybe some tips from Bob Langrish or something on how to do good DIY photography of your horse, just something different to all the norm stuff in them every month
*Nothing stopping anyone writing to the editiors asking for these things. I dont believe any of them mind having suggestions from their readers. *
i wrote to horse and rider about this, havent a suitable horse to travel to a training session (ususally miles down south and would cost me an absolute fortune to get to) and they printed my letter then answered it saying they always had comps for non riders. next month someone answered my letter agreeing wiht me, again the bit about non rider prizes - in the same issue the comp was not only for a rider with own horse but had to be an event horse of a certain level!
