I was just wondering what the value of my neddy was.

Not thinking of selling him at all as he's an absolute angel, but I think he was a bit of a bargain when I bought him.

He's a 17hh black Gelderlander gelding, 14 years old, ex carriage horse. He's got a lot of bone and is up to weight, in great health for his age and has been sound since I bought him (touch wood). He has absolutely no vices and is a real gentleman to handle and ride, you can pretty much do anything to him and he won't flinch. He's an ideal novice horse and will slow down or stop for you if you happen to lose your balance, but will go beautiful for someone with more experience. I am thinking of trying some novice dressage with him this year as he has beautiful paces. He will hack alone or in company but occasionally spooks (normally at bin bags or wheelie bins). He is very good in traffic also.

He doesn't jump, but I think thats because he hasn't been taught!

So, sorry to ask, but how much would you say he's worth?

Thanks in advance.

M

Hmmm...very tricky as he hasn't really 'done' anything. Without wishing to offend, I wouldn't have thought more than about £1500 to someone wanting a quiet hack

Hi Rambo

No offence taken!! lol

I'm not entirely sure whether he has done anything in the past as his history is a bit patchy, he has been well schooled at some point as he does know his stuff. I'm just too novicey to be able to get the best out of him!

A big weight carrying horse suitable for a novice who is also good & kind to handle and good in traffic - is a rare find. There are lots of people looking for horses like yours - mainly to hack out or perhaps to get their OHs riding. Even at 14, I would say he would be worth £2750 easily. He sounds just my cup of tea

But then I love big horses - see my sig for my two!

i was just going to say the same as AmyMay ... quiet trustworthy horses are worth their weight in gold
Hang on to that one , you and him obviersley work well together . If you want to get the best out of him have some private one to one tution and learn how to bring out the best in you aswell

good luck
xx

As he hasn't done much i would say £2,500 max BUT a horse that is a saint and looks after novices but is also capable of working well for someone more experienced could be worth his weight in gold.

Hope that makes sense

Hmmmm ok following on then..... this is not so much a how much as a could I sell at all..... I bought a warmblood mare in march last year, she was 8 in june, big 16.2hh and from Darco/Fedor blood lines. She has £217 notional BSJA winnings and I have done a few Newcomers on her but mostly doing 1.05m at the mo as I am a wimp! There are 2 issues though.... I am 'considering' selling her cos at the moment I feel she is just toooo much for me, she is a darling but I haven't been SJ-ing that long and she is not an easy ride - goes very very fast and can be heavy in the hand (though only in a snaffle) we have also just discovered that she has some arthritis in her front coffin joint but she is not lame.... with that in mind is she sale-able.......???

Probably the same sort of money you bought her for?

That depends if the arthritis has appeared 'since' she bought the horse surely

Ooops missed that.

Well - only you and your vet know that there is a potential problem. Any prospective purchaser will have her vetted - if they choose to have her feet x-rayed fine. But unless you are specifically asked if she has arthritic changes whose to know?

Erm.....everyone on this board for starters....

I think the correct term is 'deception'

Exactly Rambo!! It only appeared about 3 months after we bought her.

I guess it would be case of open to sensible offers bearing in mind the vet is happy to have her compete but her competition life will be shorter?? Could make a lovely brood mare as she has nice bloodlines I suppose......

OR I PULL MY FINGER OUT AND PERSEVERE cos i will never afford a schoolmaster!!!! (and anyway my friend reckons that thats cheating!)

Not with arthritis at 8 I'm afraid.

Could never decieve someone!! if I sold her I would want to know the person was fully aware of the condition so they looked after her properly plus I think I was decieved and it makes me furious to think they let me take her without telling me of the condition!!!!

Ummmm...... who is going to ask if an 8 year old has arthritis!! It just wouldn't occur to most people!!!

Mellymoo he sounds gorgeous, I love big horses, and black horses, so he sounds like a dream!

He actually sounds very similar to my new boy, excpet mine can jump, LOL far higher than i dare LOL!
Seriously though confidence givers suitable for a novice that look after you and steady up are so rare, i would say you could get 3k for him even at his age, I would happily pay that.
