Going from the replies in Kerilli's post a few peeps will be shopping soon!

So what hats and BPs do you recommend?

I'm due a new hat after The Precious One stood on my hat when I left it lying at the gate (my bad) and am investing in a new BP for backing. I've got a champion vent air just now and had a Champion Cobra BP so looking to replace both.

Does anyone have the Lucinda Green hat? What is it like to wear? Are the HS1 worth the extra money?

Thank you

I had a champion vent air, loved it squashed it!! Bought a HS1 as the champion did have to be padded with cotton wool.
I really dont rate it as that much better tbh, my head gets very hot and it is really really tight, 1/2 hr hack leaves a massive red mark, i was told they stretched alot!!

BP, I have a rodney powell and will get a racesafe next.

I was going to start a post like this as son's BP does need replacing & I was planning to have a look at a few at Burghley.
Both his hats are Champion Ventairs as they are the only ones we can find to fit his odd shaped head.

i've got the LG hat for xc, love it. forget its on. i have the HS1 for sj and for at home.
bp - i know i'm very vocal in my support for the Exo. wouldn't go xc in anything else now.
i have a rodney powell bp for work at home (backing and hacking out wild youngsters!) which is v comfy.
if i hadn't got an Exo, i'd be in line for the Kan-Teq, as i'm convinced it is more protective (and more cost effective, as it doesn't have the 4-years-old-and-past-it-Foam) and is supposed to be really comfy.

I've always had Charles Owen hats, currently have a Pro II (in boring black so I can use it for dressage, was tempted by silver though!) which I like.

BP is Aerowear Outlyne which I find super comfy and forget I'm wearing it once it's on.

Price tag for both was less than £200.

(Surrey Equestrian, very competitive prices)

I think you really need to try on, it depends what shape you are for both hat & BP. I wanted an HS1 or failing that a Champion air vent but my head is very stubbornly Charles Owen shaped!

I love my Racesafe 2000 but went shopping with my friend at Badminton to get her a Racesafe and as she has rather more bosum than me it didnt fit at all and the Airowear Outlyne was fabulous on her.

Do you think the LG is safer than a normal shaped hat?

ETA: I'm "champion" shaped oval head. What are HS1 and LG more similar to: CO or Champ?

I'm no where close to jumping so looking for something slightly more flexible than an Exo for getting bucked off while rebacking PMA, that's me

Although as soon as we are I'll def be investing in an Exo.

yes, i think the LG one is more protective than a normal shaped hat. it covers the temples, ears, a bit of the jaw, and the dimple at the back of the skull (is it called the occupit or something?), where hats used to protect but don't any more. that bit always feels really vulnerable to me. i'm pretty sure it passed an extra, American test which is much higher than the ones we have here.
there are holes punched in the foam in the ear areas so it doesn't render you deaf, btw!
unfortunately, like the Exo, it failed the vanity test, so didn't really take off. there were new boxed ones from Stroud Saddlery going cheap on ebay a few months ago, i grabbed 2 for about £30 each.

they can be quite difficult to find now, i think Zebra Products were manufacturing them.
the all-new more protective hat that's been mentioned that isn't in production yet (and is unlikely to be, because manufacturers think riders won't wear it) is motorcycle-helmet shaped like the LG, i've been told.

At longleat I was told by someone on a trade stand that many people buy the HSI hats even if they don’t fit 100% because they are very safe. I wouldn’t be tempted but he did say they are more charles owen shaped. (although what one person says might be different to another ones)

Somewhere I have found a detailed ratings of all riding hats for standards. I am just looking for it now. HSI was not as high as you would imagine the Champion came out higher.

I use Champion Ventair Sjing and Jockey hat because they fit me well, and are SOOOOO comfy, and are also one of the safest on the market. BP I have a champion Cobra, which is fine and does the job, but I would like a slightly less bulky one next time, and will get a rodney powell I think

Was really torn between the Kan Teq and Airowear Outlyne. Ended up with the Airowear as I felt it was a little more user friendly when it came to backing the youngster. It really is very comfortable and I forget I have it on.

HS1 for xc and GPA for everyday. cant stand my head getting hot!

I've got a Champion junior skull as Champion seem to be the only hats that fit. Got a Rodney Powell BP at mo but it's ancient so on Kerilli's feedback I'm looking at replacing it with an Exo if I can find one. Otherwise I might go for a Racesafe as they seem more flexible than the RP BP.
