Ok, so remind me never to offer to look after someone's horse for them whilst they are away!!!

Following on from last post: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/sh...rue#Post3373668

I'm horse sitting at the moment (which to be fair is no huge extra work, just 3 to do instead of 2) andarranged for a 'hand-over' sat morning - i was there 8.30 to 12.30 and she didnt show up, then got a message when i was home asking if i could get up there that pm as she couldn't get to yard as everyone had gone out. Well no I couldn't as had to go to hospital with OH to see his grandfather, said leave me a note then and if anything doesn't make sense i'll ring you (at this point OH was like well if you know you are going away and if you know you need to handover you bloody well make sure you know you can get down the yard!).

So got note, all fine, she did say her friend was going to be pitching up to ride him whilst she was away, fine.

So get down there this morning, take him out of stable and he's thrown a back shoe (in the stable - god knows how!), text her friend to say btw, he's thrown a shoe - got message back, is it front or back, said back, oh ok fine to ride then!!

Now she uses my farrier as she didnt have one, and I was there the first time he did her horse, and he quite blatently said this horse can't go unshod, he has poor feet (she had left him christ knows how long and he had lost 3 shoes - the feet were a state), so I'm not too happy if she is going to carry on riding him, as I'm looking after him I feel responsible! Sorry pointless rant, cookies for getting this far

plus i feel like a bit of a mucking out service for her friend!!

Ring friend and say horse cannot be ridden. You will let her know when it is shod and she can resume riding it.

It's your decision at the end of the day - as the horse is currently your responsibility. It's what I woul do.

Don't text her - ring her.

can you contact the owner and tell her he's lost a shoe, is she happy for you to call the farrier?if yes, then tell friend to wait until farrier has been. If no, then ask if she is happy for the friend to continue to ride him shoeless.
all options covered!

Have left voicemail for farrier to ask if he could come out and put it back on, have a sneaking suspicion he is due to be shod in the next couple of weeks anyway. Will speak to her tonight and let her know that she cant ride until shoe back on.

I feel like i'm in a tricky situation - with there being someone else involved, and being her friend, I feel quite awkward as I don't know her that well. I think had I known before I agreed to look after him that her friend would be riding him I would have said no.

Seems a bit uncessary. If you're left in charge of the horse whilst someone's on hols - you call vet, farrier etc. as necessary surely?

if his feet are that bad i would have him shod and give the owner a bill for it. also i would call her friend and tell her he cant be ridden until shoes are back on. at the end of the day the horse is your responsability for this little while and therefore do whats best for the horse.
