Would you keep your horse on a yard that is totally unoccupied at night? For example a yard not attached to a house.....or one attached to a house lived in by non-horsey folk?

I once had my horse at a yard that was not lived on and was empty between 5pm and 8am. I now feel that this was not a great setup and I wouldn't like to leave my horse in such a situation.

I would be worried about security, even with CCTV and locks anyone could just walk in and potentially steal the horses. This was the main reason I discounted renting some land as an option...

I put this in my reply to the other post, but yes I do and no I don't like it. I actually broke into my own field the other week to take my horses out as I forgot the gate key, and it was quite easy!

I now have a hundred and one huge padlocks about the place. The field is hedged in as well (thick, old hedge) so it would be hard to get in that way.
It's temporary though, and I wouldn't like to have to do it again.

My stables are 100 yards from the house but they might as well be miles away as I cannot see them from the house and there are barns etc in-between.. The main gate is bolted and locked and there is only one way out so it is fairly safe but I wish I could see them from my window.

One thing that would reassure me in my particular case is that my horse detests people looking in at him from outside his stable. He would no doubt lunge at any potential thief with barred teeth! That should put them off. If someone tried to take him out of his field, however, that would be a different matter. He would probably look at them as if butter wouldn't melt!

nope. too worried about one going down with colic after tea, and not getting found till morning... as happened to a friend's horse. not nice at all. it had taken him a very very long and horrible time to die, the stable was totally trashed...

when i was a working pupil i drove a 20 mile round trip every night to do late stables (10 horses), off my own bat, because i wouldn't leave my own horse unchecked from 5pm till 7am.

I have never had my horse on a yard that has a house attached that is positioned to be truely aware of every horse! 2 of the yards I have stabled at have no house attached at all. Although in Spain we did have security guards that would pass the yard hourly. If I lived at my in laws and had horses there I still wouldn't know what on earth they were up to at night as the stables are a good 100 metres from the house.

So long as there is an evening check done then it really doesn't make any difference whether there is someone on site or not, unless they have baby alarms in every stable and in the bedroom

I wouldn't choose a yard where no-one lived if I could help it more for the security peace of mind. At my new yard the house is only 20ft from G's stable - hopefully they would hear something very amiss?
