and yes, if everyone thinks about it, is relevent...

how many on here, has been taught how to mount and then ride, WITHOUT a girth on their saddle?

i did this whilst still a small girl in the late 60's.....and being an old bugger now with arthritis, i still have that balance and ability to mount without affecting the position of a saddle.

having read the previous thread, are people therefore not taught to mount correctly...

I schooled the 2 boys the other day with rather loose girths
blush.gif

My mate went to get on Bear and couldn't believe how loose it was!
I hacked Gimley out this morn and had it quite loose, was only a moochy hack round the village
laugh.gif

i haven't done this would love to try tho
smile.gif
but after reading the replies from my thread i feel like i'm breaking my ponys back :S when u mount from a block u still put pressure on the horses back......... unless u have a massive block and u can just swing ur leg over :P

** super sorry for massive sigi it wont change **

Nope. I started riding in the 80s and while they made us do all sorts of things that would make Health and Safety go ape these days, I can't say that was one of them. I can do a backwards roll off the back of a (small!) horse though.

My first saddle was a felt saddle, and I developed very good balance - and grip. I could never understand why people fell off so easily when their ponies spooked at something.

I thought this when my daughter started to ride. If I started a child again I would begin with a sheepskin pad, on a quiet pony. I'm sure it is better as it is possible to feel the movement of the pony, rather than just sitting on top of a hard saddle.

backward roll???

so you fall off? LOL

LOL, sometimes. You sit sideways, hold the front and back of the saddle, lie back then flick your legs over your head. Not tried it for a while, my more recent horses aren't so tolerant to my p!ssing about.

I don't do my girth up anywhere near tight enough to hold it up if Im levering up- But I figure if Im doing that what is it doing to the ponies back, so I can easily get on without saddle and girth, but I do need one stirrup

you are doing the right thing...

when i was 7 yrs old i was classed a not being a novice...and therefore had 30mins of my weekly lesson bareback...

we did jump lanes bareback at the age of 8......

that was when riding schools were proper riding schools...

i hunted at 9...and knew how to strip a double bridle too..

far too many people these days have a horse/pony WAY before they are ready...just because they have money to buy one, and stick it on full, doesnt by anymeans make them decent horse riders/owners..

sadly, far too many decent riding schools are no longer with us because of the culture we currently live in...

- I am so relieved that you are much younger than me JM! However, I am impressed with your ability to mount in such a way!! I can still do it, but I need a mounting block

and a good man on t'other side (so to speak..). I should add that I did fracture my spine and the head of my femur a few years ago - so, can I please be excused? I know that you don't do "pretty please" - so I shan't bother........

i didn't say i do it EVERYTIME..as old bones wont allow....and it is far more easier and dignified to used a mounting block...

and i actually dismount these days on the WRONG side...how naughty of me....

what my point is Doris, is all these young bucks really havent an excuse to not mount CORRECTLY from the ground......

i make the horse put her head down, i bring me leg over the saddle so im sitting on sidewards, then i try to get off without falling on me face lmao

Gets my goat when people go on about young bucks. We ride, we are all broken
wink.gif
Can't bounce on my squished foot.

I'm quite light though to say i'm about as supple as as a 90year old woman. In fact my gran is 80 and can run better than me. No exaggeration...

But i do use a block most of the time, ive split more than 1 pair of johds getting on off the floor
blush.gif

Here, here JM! I confess ("hides head in shame") to getting off (perhaps that should read "dismounting") - side-saddle'ish.

Totally agree - these young things have no bluddy excuse at all - afterall, you didn't and neither did I........so there!!
smirk.gif

Never tried to mount but we once took our girths off and rode without them but with stirrups to see if our weight was even. I popped a few jumps too and it was on a barrel shapped arab X TB so my balance must have been pretty good ...few years ago now tho lol

I would have loved to have been taught to mount properly, it bugs me I'm so rubbish! I struggle now after breaking my hip but I was never much good and I agree that it's because the riding school never told us the correct way when I was little.

I'm with you JM, although now only mount from block, or in extreemis, when out hacking, a passing rock or whatever
grin.gif
Also learnt to ride a long long time ago, not with loose girths out and about though as our hills are too steep! The danger is forwards or backwards slippage of saddle. I stewarded for my old RI this summer and he says he could no longer teach as would not be allowed to teach people to ride any more, only to sit on a horse! No more learning without irons for an hour, including rising trot.
smile.gif

I don't think we rode/mounted without girths, but certainly did lots of no-stirrups/bareback riding. I think I'd be worried, like YorksG, about forward/backward slippage of the saddle!

I can still get on 17.2 from the ground with a minimum of fuss, but would love to learn how to do that without a girth.

did you see my Talland diary?!
grin.gif

BIG fans of no reins no stirrups - I was crippled
blush.gif

I was taught to mount properly when I'd been riding for about three years
blush.gif
In my defence I learnt to ride on a 14.2 ex RDA pony when I was 5 so getting on from the ground was a little out of my reach
tongue.gif
I used to stand on top of the wendy house

When P died
frown.gif
I went to the local RS where they made us get on and off bareback - no H&S in those days!!
wink.gif
Worked a treat though!! Sadly I'm now old and fat so I use a mounting block rather than the ground
tongue.gif
though I can still get on from the ground if needs be
