Following on from my passport thread...

RE microchips, my two arabs were done as foals by their then Vet, so a quick call to your Vet should give you a price. You could get it done when they are coming anyway (eg vaccinations) so you save the call out charge.

When I bought the arabs, I had to fill in a small change of ownership form for the microchip company. I also had to inform the breed society and pay for a change of ownership with them.

My other horse is more complicated as she has two passports. *sigh* Her AHS one has been lost, but instead of paying £75 for a new copy, her old owner just got her a cheap new passport with a different PIO. I have changed the ownership in that one and I have informed the AHS of the situation. I have got her freezemarked and I am the registered owner linked to the freezemark. She is not microchipped.

Actually there's not one thing that is definative. Evidence would include:
a receipt from previous owner - even if it's only for £1 - this is strongest evidence
a history of vets bills being paid by you
same with insurance/ farrier/ livery
photos of him/ you over time

The arab is chipped which is registered to my name. I cant remeber how much it cost...about £40 I think, had it done when he had his vaccs so I cant really remember.
He's also registered with the breed society in my name.
Plus I had to fill out a change of ownership form which had been signed by the breeder to confirm change of ownership.

The other two have bog standard passports but are freezemarked and registered to my name.

Do micro chips/ freeze marks really count? What's to stop my loanee calling vet and askingg her to chip him in her name? same for freezemark co?
Genuine question?

I would assume that you have a loan agreement signed by both parties?
So if she went ahead and did anything like that you could still prove you were the owner....

Vet and freezemarking people checked passports to make sure they were in my name IIRC.

Ask your vet about pricing of microchips - I think they are around 20-30 pounds but I may be totally wrong.

When we had the welshie microchipped she was double-checked for an existing one (even though it was very unlikely as she was bought from her breeder as a baby!), the vet inserted the chip and stamped her passport on the 'notes' page. We just sent the chip details off to the breed society (not the whole passport as the transfer of ownership was already up to date) and they updated her records and sent me a letter to say they had done so. ETA:this was before compulsory chipping for foals

Our vet checks the microchip when here to do annual jabs - whether this is normal or because we are slightly paranoid after having a dog whose chip failed I'm not sure - it's good practice either way though.

Absolutely - have a contract (but also well aware they don't really offer any protection !)

I know vets in this area are happy to come out and chip and issue a new passport (friend had this done recently to an older horse) - then she'd have a passport in her name and could get freezemark done

Not that she would - lovely loaner - but theoretically it would be easy

Bit scary really when you consider all possibilities....

I guess as you say....its the whole thing.....farrier/vet bills and testimonies etc

Bit more easier to prove when its a breed society passport/registry though, and you have to get change of ownership form signed by old/new owner.

Ok how about this, another system flaw ... not all microchips are registered on a central database according to my vet. I bought a new horse and my vet said she wouldn't even know which company would have issued the chip because it begins in 941....

So I own the horse have the passport but unfortunately he is chipped with an untraceable chip so cannot change it or get a new one and the PIO is proving hard to get hold or to change the passport, and then people wonder why I don't want to pay for this service?
