For those of you that were following my previous post ‘Am I being realistic?’ In which we discussed how I really wasn’t, I have managed to find a potential loan pony! (Obviously to commence once the coronavirus situation calms down).

The lady had a baby six months ago and is struggling to give her pony the amount of time that she needs in terms of riding and TLC. The whole set up sounds great (I’ve heard great things about the yard and facilities) and it’s only down the road. She’s also very flexible on days and times, and is less concerned re financial contribution but perhaps I could pay for the 6 weekly trim (which I’m more than happy to do). The pony sounds really fun, a little sassy mare that loves farm rides, hacking, jumping and they hold monthly shows at the yard I could look into once I get to know her better.

My question is: would a 13.2hh New Forest cross be suitable for a 10st (just under) 5ft 2 rider? My last horse was 15hh and at the time I remember thinking that she wasn’t very big. The lady seems to think I’d be fine on her but I’m just worried that I would be too big as while she isn’t fine, she isn’t a big hairy cob either!

is there a general rule of thumb when it comes to what weight a horse can comfortably carry? She doesn’t look tiny in the pics.

It will be absolutely fine. A 13.2hh iNew Forest sn't small, as they can be quite solid, and at 5'2" you are very petite. I'm 5'6" and when my horse is out of work due to conformation issues, which seems to be more often than not, I ride a friends 14hh Welsh x pony. I don't look big and he carries me perfectly fine. Besides ponies are super cheeky, with bags of personality and so much fun. They also seem to be more forgiving than horses. Good luck with your future horsey endeavours x

Thank you! That makes me feel better! She doesn’t look small from the pictures so I’m sure it’ll be fine. Thanks again! X
 
My 5'6 9 stone Mum rides my 14.1 Connemara. She also doesn't look much different on her compared to me (5'2) as I think our legs aren't too dissimilar in length so size/weight/shape of rider isn't black and white. I wouldn't worry about it until you actually sit on her.

Glad you found something though and I hope it works out :)

Thank you! Yes I guess the belly takes up some leg. Just frustrating we’re going to have to wait before I can go and meet her, but it’ll be the same with any I find I guess! Fingers crossed!
 
I rode my 13.3 new forest type for 22 years. I was only 10 when I got him but I grew to 5'8 and 10 stone but continued to ride him 4 times a week until he was 30 when I retired him.
