Towing without the category B+E entitlement
The category B entitlement (standard car licence) entitles you to couple a category B vehicle (up to MAM of 3500kgs) with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM. (in this instance allowing a combined weight of 4250kgs MAM).


You can pull a trailer over 750kgs so long as the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and that the combination does not exceed 3500kgs.

Example where a category B licence could tow
Your towing vehicle has an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes;

It is coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes;

This could be driven by the holder of a category B (standard driving licence) entitlement because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle.

this confuses me ??? so does this mean i can tow alright as long as im within weight limits etc ??? so i would be ok towing just the one horse in trailer as long as all my weight doesnt exceed 4.25 tons ????

What about the weight of passengers, tack, other equipment etc?

I personally wouldn't risk it (passed trailer test at 1st attempt back in April - had 2X3hour lessons .....)

i think you have confused yourself reading this, it doesn't even make sense in some places?!
do you know the weight of your trailer and car? when car and trailer are fully laden they couldn't possiblly fit into the weight catagorys you have stated..

you will still need to take the test to tow a trailer and horse legally!

There are some good older posts on this,

it is the MAM of the trailer (which for a horse trailer will be more than 750kg) so unless you have it downrated and tow with a car it is impossible to get the combination of the tow vehicle and trailer mams down under 3.5t
