Following on from popularbreeds, what unusual breeds do you see in your area?

Is that a Smooth Collie, or a smooth coated border collie?

Just wondered as the smooth collie breed is so uncommon that this is the first one I'd ever seen. A beautiful blue merle.

ets Apparantly the smooth collie is a vulnerable breed with only 43 registrations in 2008.

We have a Tibetan Terrier come to the park quite often. Lovely little dog, gets on well with my idiot :D

My deputy has a black one and I saw another while hacking near her house but not hers. She tells me all her mates have them, but the cream colour is more popular, she reckons.

Lol, I can't speak for anyone else but I don't think 'unusual' is the right word. I think 'uncommon' is more like it. At least that's how I see it :) Unusual would be seeing a purple dog. :D:D

OK, uncommon.

I am surprised at that! There are loads of smooth coated collies round here but I suspect not many of them are registered as most of them are farmer's working dogs - as ours is ;)

Here she is.... Rosie, our smooth haired border collie (9 months old)

Unusualish dogs I have seen this summer

ban dog
wire haired viszlas (lots of smooth about but few wire haired ones)
a massive kommodor - this one was bigger an a St Bernard - about the size of your average shetland pony and wtih more bone!!! :D)
a few kuvasz - not common but you do see them occassionally
pumi - I see one in the park quite often and its very cute

oh - I forgot I see a chinese crested dog in the park sometimes and also a shar pei. I live opposite a park in addition to being a vet school and work pt time in a vet clinic so I do see lots of unusual dogs on a regular basis. What I hate here though is lots of people crop dogs ears - boxers, dobermans etc - some of the dogs I suspect are used for fighting more or less have their ears cut off with almost nothing left :(

LOL - in my lifetime we have had a Scottish Rough Haired Collie (think Lassie) and now a smooth haired border and I have seen plenty of bearded - Yep I think that covers them all!! Who would have thought that you could get so many collies!! :p

Lets face it - they all herd sheep at the end of the day!! :p

Its really interesting to hear about the different breeds you get in different parts of the world. I had never heard of a BMC before! I hadn't heard of many of the Hungarian breeds either before I came here (well other than viszlas and puli's :D ) but some of the others are really lovely :)

Not terribly popularish but sometimes we see (at least in grooming shop)

Spanish Water Dog (I was really glad that I saw them groomed in a seminar - 7F all off yay!)
Leos
Pyrs
Dandie Dinmont
Bedlington Terrier
Afghan
Khortals Griffon
Munsterlander
Norfolk/Norwich Terriers (I groom one of each)

and oddly, here in Scotland, I don't see that many Scottish Terriers ;) Another breed that I'm surprised to have never even had a phone call to query about is English Setters.

Used to think Chinese Cresteds were exotic, but someone round me breeds them. And where I used to live in the US, MinPins were rather popular - but are fairly exotic in Scotland where I am now.

Do my Corgi's (and his brothers) count? I've not seen them anywhere else.

We board the most gorgeous little Corgi called Charlie, I could easily snaffle him up! :D

My Mum's old Irish Water Spaniel :D Although he was always mistaken for a Labradoodle

My Mum seems to befriend people that breed unusual dogs, one breeds IWSs and another breeds Long Haired Weimeraners.

We used to meet a Giant Schnauzer when I lived in Gloucester, he was gorgeous and a breed I never see apart from on Crufts!

This is a Smooth Collie

My brothers puppy, Bella. No there aren't many bred in the UK. My brother waited 8 months for this one. The breeder gets bitches over from abroad. All 3 came into season at the same time. 1 lost them, 1 only had 2 pups, the other 3.

I see a couple of most breeds.... The ones I only come across in a certain place are KarynK's tasmanian devils (;) ) Blue and Digger!! ;)

I've got an Old English Sheepdog, which probably isn't that unusual countywide but as far as I'm aware it's the only one in our area! People always stop to say hello as she's such a character and reminds them of the Dulux dog on TV.
One of our dog walking buddies also has an Italian Spinoni (sp?) and a wirehaired Vizla which seem to be fairly uncommon too!

my two maltese i'd class as unusual, im yet to see another! and my lhasa apso who constantly gets mistaken for a shihtzu

What a nice fit looking dog. My niece and nephew have both got borders, but I don't generally see many around. They used to be popular but seem less so now. Maybe people have finally realised that they aren't suburban dogs for inactive homes. It's mainly spaniels, labs and terriers (of all varieties), plus the unavoidable bichons.

I did see a Maltese puppy this morning. They are relatively uncommon, due to price mainly I think.

Maltese, Lhasas and Shih Tzus - common as heck in my area. Spinones - we sometimes see them too -- but rarely. Years ago I groomed a smooth coated colllie. And it wasn't just a rough collie clipped bald either ;)
