I took my new horse round a 2ft3 Hunter Trials?

He's a 7 year old, done SJ up to 1m10. I've only ever SJ'd but to about 90cms and jumped round a 90cm XC course on a pony ages ago!!

The horse has been XC schooled once before and I'm taking him for a lesson at my RC field this weekend which has some small XC fences. If I'm feeling brave then I'll have a jump.

If all goes to plan this weekend at the schooling session then I was hoping to enter a local unaff XC in a few weeks time.

The first class is about 2ft3 but the second class is over the BE90 course which I think is too much for our first time out. We meet all the restrictions to do the little class but wondered if people would think I'm taking the p*** to do such a small course on a horse that has SJ'd so much higher?

If it'll be a problem then I'll just wait and see if there are any others but I kinda figure we all have to start somewhere?

I don't see any problem with that at all. XC is a whole different ball game to SJ.

I did much the same with mine, he had been out jumping BN/DIS with previous owner but it took me a long time to get him happy and confident jumping round even the tiniest XC tracks.

Better having fun and gaining confidence at 2'3" IMO :)

I would guess that unless you are planning on telling everyone, you should be fine :D Far better to start down there and work up than jump in where you're 'expected' to and start too big and risk taking a step back. Good luck!

The difference between you and the OP of the pothunting thread is that in that thread BOTH the rider and the pony had been competing at far higher heights. In your case only the horse has and you are still a relative novice over these heights. I think you would get away with doing even 2 seasons at low heights (depending on how quickly or slowly you progress) without anyone thinking anything bad of you.

I say "go for it!" :)

Definately go for it. When I got my pony he had been an affiliated SJ, but the highest I ever jump him is 2'3. I'm not confident enought to go any higher with him!

Like previous replies I would say go for it its a different dicipline after all - if in any doubt and if you will seriously worry about what other people say you can always go HC. TBH most of those that whinge are only jealous!!
Given your circumstances I would say have a go and good luck - let us know how you get on!

Sj and XC are completely different - I actually don't think it would be safe to do BE90 if neither you nor the horse have done much XC before.

With solid fences there is much more at stake so you need to be confident riding at that level before attempting it.

Do the 2.3ft class until you feel really confident.

Totally agree with this :)
