I changed my rotties over to feeding raw after taking lots of advice from on here, and am now well into the swing of it with much happier dogs :)

However, in the last 6-8 weeks my bitch has been sick after eating chicken bones. It isn't proper sick as it always happens overnight so her food has been digested by the time she is poorly, but it is always liquid with 1 or 2 chunks of bone in it. I initially had her on chicken thighs so I changed to poultry necks as they are smaller & easier to crunch up, but it is still happening.

I now only give her bones twice a week but it happens every time. There is nothing wrong with her, as in there is nothing stuck, she eats all her food and is perfectly happy other than this.

Ah whilst typing this I have just remembered she can't eat white fish either - she always used to even before I switched to raw as she would have it from time to time. In the last few months every time I have given her white fish she has sicked it up immediately, almost as soon as it hits her stomach. She will happily eat mackerel, sardines, tuna with no problem.

Does anyone have any similar problems?

It might be something left over from the old diet it can take some time to work though any problems from it. One of mine can still be a bit sensitive sometimes, usually after hes eaten too quickly. Is she ok with other bones if so I would stick with them for a while then try the chicken again, it seems she is digesting it perhaps a break will help.

Sometimes they will sick up bits of bone if they can't digest it but this only happens occasionally with ours, it shouldn't happen regularly i don't think. Is she bolting them too quickly and not crunching them enough - if the bits are too big they will sick them back up, normally with stomach bile which is clear/yellowish. Try holding them why she crunches, or crush them a bit first or try feeding the bones frozen so she has to crunch them more.

With the fish i guess if it's coming straight up then i stop feeding it.

Surely chicken bones are a huge no, no for dogs???

Raw bones of any kind are fine, it's just cooked bones that splinter and cause problems. Raw chicken bones make up the majority of the diet of a lot of dogs on here. :)

sonjafoers, are they whole bits of bone she's sicking up or just very little bits? Does she bolt them down without chewing? It's normal for them to hock up any indigestible bits, if she's taking in whole bones without chewing that might be the problem. Maybe try chicken wings with nice soft small bones and give them a bash with the back of a heavy knife first to break them up a bit inside.

My female has done this a couple of times, sicked up really small crunched-up bones in a lovely pile of yellowy goo....only with the wings, nothing else, I also put it down to her bolting.

Amymay, as mentioned, it's cooked bones which splinter which are the no-no.

a lovely pile of yellowy goo....

That yellowy bile stuff is the worst, I can clean up the smelliest of nasty diarrhoea but that sour bile smell makes me gag. :o

Someone hocked up a lump of beef knuckle this morning, about the size of a small egg, and decided to do so on the open wooden stairs so it dripped down onto the kitchen floor.

Thank you everybody, it is pieces about an inch square that are coming up, maybe slightly smaller, and there is one or 2 in each sick pile so I guess it is simply she is bolting them down.

The pieces that come out the other end are very well crunched up and tiny, so these must be the bits she isn't chewing properly.

She was very sick on chicken wings blackcob, even when I chopped them up for her. The ones that seem to cause the least problem are the necks so I think I will stick to them but chop them up.

I have stopped the white fish Gina&Prince, it quite clearly doesn't agree with her anymore!
