It is the manner in which the horse was being slaughtered that caused the concern.

In this instant they where using a shotgun which was being held upside down to shoot the horse.

This is not the correct procedure and is also dangerous for the operator and those assisting him. It is the procedures within this slaughterhouse which need to be investigated, reported on and then either members of staff need disciplining or correct procedures need to be introduced.

on both threads you have said that....we'll call him Mr Slaughterman.. is using a "shotgun" WRONG it is a "RIFLE"....

I would always have my horses pts at home and I would be present if humanely possible. I would not hold it up in order to be there in an emergency obviously.
The method depends on the circumstances. Whichever is right at the time. I am however very impressed with the video and especially how the horses were treated by the staff and how relaxed they seem.

Having seen the video I would no longer condemn anyone for sending or taking their horse to that particular abbatoir. I was prejudiced before by my morals and overactive imagination regarding these so called "houses of horror" The reality is as good as I could hope.

I was interested in the gun though. When my mare was pts the vet had a short gun with a silencer. The long gun in the video looks pretty unwieldy. I'm just wondering what is the difference between the two and why each chose the gun they did?

My opinion has not changed, I have never had issues with a properly run slaughterhouse. If possible, I would however have mine pts at home, if I couldn't, that would be fine at a well run slaughterhouse.

I personally would never ever send any horse to the knackers yard. Mine will be PTS and buried here at home.

In this case, I definately think all horses should be PTS at home and their bodies taken to the knackers yard. I think its our responsibility to see the horse through to the end and not leave it to someone else to kill the horse any way they please.

If only we always had this choice

. When we lost our stallion last January at a University Hospital, we were several hundred miles away from him and were devastated that we were not there with him at the end. The thought of him being PTS with no familiar faces or in familiar surroundings will always stay with me, but tragically the decision was out of our hands...

The only difference was that he was cremated and taken home again for us, although not everybody would be able to afford to do this...

I would love to bury all my horses at home, but with the new laws in place and being a Studfarm we dont have this luxury. It is also not a pleasant experience watching a horse going away on the back of a lorry, although we have no choice...

Ideally I'd have my horse pts at home, although of course if they are miles away from you that choice can be taken from you.
I support the ILPH's Hook not Hoof campaign, because as long as there are equines that need to be pts, and that don't have loving owners to be with them, then we will need slaughterhouses. This opinion comes from my love of horses, I can't bear to think of the alternatives if there were no slaughterhouses for horses in the UK.
As for this video, there's nothing wrong with it.
Could someone who wants to ban slaughterhouses give some info on what the alternative would be? Bearing in mind that it will never be all are pts at home with a kind owner nearby.

LindaCorby, that was the most ridiculous you have said yet, or are you just making stuff up now?
You don't have to leave a comment at all to vote.
Just look at other polls, I think you'll find that the number of votes generally outweighs the number of comments. How could that happen if you had to comment?

I think that the good slaughterhouses have a role to play - like many have said, I wouldn't send a horse of mine there but then I'm an owner of one/two horses so am in a position to make that decision.

I'd prefer places like those to exist so that old/sick/unwanted horses can be put out of their misery quickly and painlessly.
