Following on from Swiss Dressage Team

agree with Weezy... fof went out to train in Dubai years ago, and the first thing he did was turn off all the stable aircons, as he reckoned it was going to do the horses' lungs etc in, the difference between ice cold and baking hot, repeatedly.
although it is horrible having to put a tired horse in a very hot stable after xc, and watch it break out in a sweat again, after 40 mins of hosing down already... been there, hated it.

i think they should consider putting heart monitors on every horse for xc, having worked out their individual working rates beforehand, so that if one gets dangerously high, they can be stopped by the stewards. i can see horses keeling over otherwise... the xc is going to be absolutely gruelling in those conditions.

Are they perhaps planning to sue the aircon during the day for SJ and Dressage horses to keep them comfortable before they compete during the presumably cooler darker hours?

Still think the main thing behind all this is that the riders should get to know what conditions they're facing and only take horses that they think will cope with them.

I think they are talking absolute rubbish in the article when they compare it with olympics in Athens or Atlanta. The humidity is nowhere near alike - specially as during the Atlanta olymics the weather was unusually cool and they didnt have the sort of problems they had prepared for - and neither of them havd the polllution there is in Hongkong

agreed, Tanta. i read an article the other day where coaches were really worrying about the lungs of their human athletes. i dread to think what it'll do to the horses.

much as i'd love to be going, i'm glad i'm not going, if you know what i mean.

why is everybody so negative about the olympics in Hong Kong? I'm currently working in HK and the equine facilities here are absolutely amazing! much better than what you will find in most parts of the world!!!! stables are fantastic and yes the weather is not ideal but they have done everything to try and cope with the problem. The test event in the summer was a huge success and i'm sure things would have been said already if countries were at all concerned about anything. It may sound really stupid but we do have alot of horses out in HK and riders, and you can't say our lungs are significantly worse because of it???!!!???
sorry don't mean to sound bad but just annoyed at people being so negative about it all. why don't we just wait and see!
