Following on from the dog thread - why did you pick that breed..

When I was looking for my first horse, I wanted a hunter type, so some sort of TBx with a draft horse, and I ended up with a warmblood. He was wonderful but had his problems, so I always said I wouldn't get another WB, I'd stick with TBx's as I like their forward-thinking brains. So the next horse I got was an irishxWB, sadly his time on this earth wasn't to be too long; the one I have now is IDxTB, and is the spookiest horse I've ever ridden but I love him to bits!

I didn't realise he wasn't the type you were looking for! Still, I'm glad I did push you, you seem to adore him, and he you as well :)

Oh god, me too but how have I got to my age without knowing that they don't exist!!!

I had a arabxwelsh palamino, I didn't know pure Arab palominos don't exist either.

I didn't go out to pick my Appy girl, I saw her dam advertised for sale and liked her, and I had seen her sire and liked him, then when she was born I decided spur of the moment I would go and buy her, I'm glad I did as she's just my type, I would def have another Appy.

Our Connie we did pick because of her breed, there are quite a few of them over here in Ireland, they aren't overly expensive, and are the right height and build for us, they are also usually good dooers and could manage on our land.

I've always loved big flashy warmbloods, and that I expected to end up with. Alf is Shire/TB, a bit common and prone to hairiness, and not exactly a flashy mover - but he chose me, and I was powerless to resist. Haven't regretted choosing him for a second - he's such a star, and we are as close as two different species can be!

He's not your average slightly common lump anyway - I'm very lucky to have a horse with his history!!

Fell in love with chunky native types as a child learning to ride, my first horse love was a lovely Bay Cob Gelding called Harvey. He was so kind and willing, when I go back to the school now-a-days for the odd visit or ride, the yard owner always knows exactly who I want to ride :) I've always said if he was ever up for sale, I'd be in like a shot, but he never would be because he's just such a fantastic pony.

So it was only natural that when the time came to find my own, I naturally gravitated towards cobs. And Irish Cobs just ticked the box for me with all the gorgeous hair! I can spend hours just gently brushing and plaiting my girl :)

I don't choose certain breeds as such, I just go by the nature of the horse etc. Although I tend to avoid warmbloods as the ones I've had and known just don't suit me. I seem to have had a few arab part breds and got on well with them, and I love Luso x's. Would love a pure Iberian one day, they just try so hard and are so intelligent. Otherwise, always have a soft spot for Welsh Cobs - just so much fun to ride as they have so much character.

Hundreds of years ago I could only afford a foal. He turned out to be part Arab ( Arab x Welsh pony ) . I've had other horses since but PA's must have stayed in my heart because 20 years later I bred this ( Anglo Arab x ( TB x Welsh D )

and she's still here 20 plus years later. I hope I'm not being too cheeky, but I'd be grateful if Faracat would define her colouring.

My pony was given to me and he was a Haflinger with some Arab or Welsh thrown in. Lovely pony, did it all... driving, hacking, pony club, trekking... . Had to be put down at the age of 29. If I ever have another horse it will be a Trakehner. Worked for a Trakehner stud way back in the early 90s and fell in love with the breed.

I think it's possible I have wanted every breed known at some point when I was a kid but I still would love a friesian or Andalusian - haven't actually ridden either but I don't think I'd be disappointed!
I currently have a Welsh x TB and actually he is such a great character, his attitude is great, most the time 😉 but he is a friendly amenable chap who is just nice to be around which makes me smile and that's the whole point of it all, right?!
