why are we the only ones who are expected to give a thank you gesture? I mean it doesn't state in the highway code if no thank you signal is received then feel free to pass next horse at speed !!.. do we pass cyclists slowly and wait for a nod or wave..do we give way (as a driver) to motorcyclists and hover around waiting for a hand shake !! As riders it is more important to keep hands on the reins and in control of horse, next they will be saying they weren't in control as I sped past as they were waving !! I mean I am polite when out but it seems to be expected that if we don't acknowledge we are ignorant stuck up and should not be on the road...I gave way to a bus tonight (in my car) he didn't even acknowledge me at all... should he therefore be removed from the roads ... I mean come on... it seems only horse riders are EXPECTED to always deliver a gesture when they are the most vulnerable when they take hands away from the reins !

I always say thanks .. If someone has gone out of their way to slow down ..I'm
Greatful .. So more than happy to say thanks ;) I say thanks if someone gives way to me / let's me pull out when I'm driving too .. Maybe I'm polite ? But I would rather be polite than rude ;)

my point though is not that I don't say thank you...because I do...but why is it we are expected to say thanks for something that should be the norm ie passing slow and wide...I think its because we are so grateful for the considerate drivers we do always acknowledge but we shouldn't be EXPECTED to in order to remain on the roads...I EXPECT drivers to slow down...but more often than not they don't !

I think the fact you remember the bus driver not giving you a thank you means that on the whole it is the done thing. I know as a driver I wave thank you if someone gives way to me likewise I expect a thank you back and get annoyed at the ones who cruise on past. It's common courtesy surely?
So no I don't feel riders are the only ones expected to say thank you on the roads.
Cyclist are just a law into themselves and I find some of them the rudest road users out there!

well in honesty I pass through a school run..so I can name ten who didn't say ty but not cos they stuck in my mind just its the norm here.!!

Infact in all honesty here the joyriders take pleasure in scaring the horses so if I need my hands on the rein they will stay there...3 weeks ago I was riding down the road and a vw golf sped past so close it clipped my stirrup ... managed to get a pic (youngster is a saint) posted on fb...turns out it was an old neighbours friend... father gave him a *******ing... 2 days later on way to event was talking to friends groom.. same guy was involved in rta as he drove through a blind bend at speed on other side of road... can honestly say my first thought was karma.... now tell me a hand gesture would have made a difference to his outlook on the roads !

I've often wondered this. I don't mind saying thank you (not that I hack anymore particularly) but I do feel people like cyclists should also say thank you - mainly because as drivers we have to slow right down to pass riders and cyclists so I feel its only polite to say thanks. But NO cyclists EVER say thank you! They often ride two by two nowadays, I had to follow 2 of them the other day at walking pace for ages until it was safe for me to pass which I didn't mind but not even a smile from either of them! I do expect other drivers to wave if I've given way to them though - I usually give them some erm... less than polite hand gestures if they don't! Motorcyclists I find are generally pretty polite (probably biased as I ride those too).

We are expected to say thank you perhaps because we are more of an unusual obstacle for most drivers. Thanking them indicates that they have passed carefully and considerately - and for that we are grateful

Cyclists do often thank me. If it is not possible to ol the reins in one had to give a thank you then you can always nod and smile as a thank you.
