On Friday evening when I went up to catch Bertie, I noticed that his field buddy, Bean looked awfully sticky on his neck from a distance. I shouted them both over and Bean had a large cut on his neck. First thoughts were fence/tree branch. I called his owner and brought them both in. With it being this time of year it was covered in flies and I didn't realise how deep it was intil we bathed it. The vet came down and on closer inspection was sure this was done with glass.
A few months ago we had found secondary school children playing truant in the field sticking glass and scissors into the ground, we were thinking perhaps this time they had gone one further.
Bean has had stitches, and the two have been moved well away from sight of school children (although it is now a long trec to catch them!).
Bean's owner went upto the school this morning, as it has been closed this weekend. Apparently she went absolutely mental with the headmistress who was again rather dumb when faced with the facts that a pupil had potentially injured a horse purposely. CCTV had been put up and is being checked this evening by the local police who we were quick to contact.
No only is this completely sick, wrong and twisted if it was the actions of a pupil, but I would be very worried about the welfare of a child attending that school- if truants playing in a horses' field goes unoticed god knows what else will, I thought children had to be accounted for at school!?

I know this isn't strictly PC and not a serious reply before I get flamed, and I have said this before on similar threads, but the temptation to put an aggressive stallion in that field MIGHT be too much for me....

More worryingly these are probably going to be tomorrows' violent criminals

Hope the pone recovers well.

Glad the horse is OK,could have been much worse

I would really think about a contacting the LEA this time, the head obviously doesnt have a clue what to do and next time the horses might not be so lucky.
Even though thy have been moved,if the kids are sick enough to do it once knowing they are CCTV,they could well go looking for them.

This may have happened when school was closed though, after hours etc. When school ends at the end of the day the school is no longer responsible for the children. I do think that the head teacher could have a more responsible attitude, but it may not be while the pupils are actually under her care.

YorksG, In reply to out of hours. I have always been taught the school are responsible/we are representing them whenever we are in uniform.
Hope you catch the buggers that are doing it and a speedy recovery to Bean.

Nick.

Is it possible that he's rolled on a piece of glass from the previous idiots activities? I know you will have checked the field thoroughly but could you have missed a bit?

I'm only suggesting this as I hate the thought that anyone could intentionally wound a horse.

Though of course I know they do.

Big vibes for poor Bean's speedy recovery.

Whilst I totally agree that this is horrific and must be stopped, as a teacher can I suggest that its about time the students and their parents were held to account rather than the school being responsible for everything? Its our job to educate but if they chose to abscond and engage in criminal activity, thats their choice and they should be punished for it. I agree the head isn't being helpful and I know my school would be much more pro-active. I hope the police catch and punish them - they deserve it. As for the comment about being in uniform therefore representing the school - absolutely and the school should punish for truancy as well as the criminal act but I can't emphasise enough that the students are at fault here, not the school!

you have my sympathy, some kids & adults are a disgrace to the human race,
we had trouble back when i was a kid with airguns being fired at the horses, some times while being ridden, the reason apparently was they assumed the horses were belonging to 'rich' people and so they were jealous i guess?

there is in all honesty sod all you can do, even if caught on CCTV i bet the police won't do anything, we bought good CCTV after vandalism on the cars and house, it clearly showed my next doors kid in a striking jumper coming out of his house doing damage and going back into his house, the police said it was not good enough to identify him? what did they want fingerprints & a signed confession!

i would suggest you put posters up, in local shops etc showing the injury & asking for help, even if you get no information it may make the problem lessen as other people may keep an eye on whats going on, Joe public does not care about other humans in general but they often do when it involves an innocent animal, & hopefully the decent kids might shun the scum.

also do you have electric fence? if not add 1 but remember to put up warning signs.....small hard to see warning signs!!

bye
