Notices up at the yard re 'you must wear a hat at all times whilst riding', children must wear a hat at all times just on the yard as well as riding.

Sunday, I hacked out to the next village to see two of the teens from our yard riding out with NO hats!!!!!!!!, no florecents, and in trainers - then totally blanked me when I passed - they had stopped at the shop.

Yesterday, an old friend came for a nosey round the yard, and teenager mentioned above was again riding her horse hatless, this time in the indoor, with cigarette in mouth

Indoor is flammable and obviously no smoking allowed.

Will be complaining to YO tonight, he was'nt around yesterday.

Ended up moving back as there was no school at the yard I rented

Ended up keep hiring a local place which costs more than moving back to livery!

So just have to make sure everything is kept locked up and avoid the bitchin! The joys of big yards eh!

It makes me laugh that there are people at my yard who ride their horse up to the field, on the road, bareback with a headcollar and lead rope and No hat!
Yet they wouldn't dream of riding without a hat normally, you know, like tacked up!

Must admit to being guilty of that once seahorse! Huge yard, mostly closed off as they were moving the piggies round, I was running late, field half mile hike away right round the outskirts of the yard, so hopped on whizzed round to field, never even thought how stuuuupid it was!

Maybe they think its cool- I see a lot of them around me. I would never ride out on a road without a hat, nor would I be able to school a horse effectively whilst having a fag- not that I would want to either. If teen is anything like teens round us she needs a fall from grace to wake her up I'm afraid.

My older sister used to say to me when I didn't want to wear a hat was "Do you want to be stupid for the rest of your life?"

This made more sense to me, rather than "It is dangerous not to wear a hat." It appealled to my vanity. I used to say the same to my children when they wanted to ride a bike with no helmet.

Well they must be tough (even if stupid!) On Sunday I rode in vest, fleece, waistcoat, jacket, hi-vis jacket, jods, socks, boots, chaps, hairnet, scarf, hat and gloves! Took me longer to get dressed than ride (not really!) but FAR too cold for trainers and no hat.

My next door neighbour, not only does she not weat a hat when riding on the road, she rides bareback with just a rope halter; and she walks her horse in hand around the village with nothing at all! ( on the horse that is ) she just puts a rope around her if a car comes along!

It's a rule on our yard that everyone must wear a hat while mounted - an ex-livery used to put her hat on, ride up the lane, take it off, hide it in the hedge, go for a hack then put it back on as she came back onto the yard in case YO saw her!

She had thick, curly hair and didn't want it messed up by a hat (and she'd have had a thick, curly, messed-up brain if she'd come off on the road!).
