Following on from the 'whip' post

Does anyone else find that their horse gets "cross" if they use their stick?

I have to be very careful how I use mine, if Polly feels I have used it 'unfairly' she will put in some tremendous bucks. If I use it on a hack for any reason she will grunt really loudly and toss her head with her ears flat back.

However, if she thinks it is 'ok' for me to have used my stick (for example if she has stopped at a jump or if she is being lazy about direct transitions) she will react appropriately - by going forward and doing as she has been told.

Anyone else's horse have a personal 'rule book' for stick usage?

oh yes,,,,,,,, cant use in canter at all and can not take hand off reins to use short whip, followed by bucks you will be amazed at and whip lash for me !!

Shadow doesn't really care but Destiny grunts, puts her ears back and tosses her head and sometimes bucks!!

My mare was like that! If she thought she didn't deserve a smack she'd buck!

Yes. Bert throws a tantrum if he is tapped for manners! and he gets tapped again for the tantrum!

Sometimes he squeals and bounces and mini bucks (more like hops) followed by a big dog shake. He gets tapped for this which makes him do it all again. He is like a sodding child!

Yep Spring will usually let you get away with one smack but that's about it and when she bucks she blomin' well means it!

LOL - glad it isn't just me.

I think it is funny especially on hacks because she gets so MAD if she gets a tap and lets out these massive furious grunts - all for a tiny tap on the shoulder to say "stay on the verge"

Not so much a buck as a violent kick out at your leg or the whip whichever he thinks you've used rudely!

Pickle will do a small buck if you use a stick behind your leg going towards a jump, I never do but when a friend did because he isnt used to it he wasnt a happy bunny. Also if he feels he is going as fast as he can! he will flick his tail about in annoyance!

I don't use a hip on Oshl because he doesn't really need one and he gets upset when you so much as raise you voice to him, he was very poorly treated as a youngster so is a big wuss now. Monty is never naughty, only have a schooling whip on him because he is a big lazy bones. Willow really gets really really mad when you whip him, and just plays up even more!

Ifg I use mine on the big lad, he will either jump the next jump with feet to spare, or width and then will gallop after it at flat out speed. HE doesn't like it

I learnt this lesson very early on with Ellie

I was talking to a friend and she started napping at an entrance through some bushes that we were going through. I kicked her on and she napped really badly so I smacked her (If I had been paying attention I would have realised she was genuinely scared but I was nattering). She pinned her ears back and turned round to look at me. I swear she said "Smack me with that again when i don't deserve it and watch what happens!" She then span round and b**ggered off with me for about 20 strides. Stopped turned round again as though to say "Did you get the message?" (I have to say that I did

)

But smack her for being lazy or naughty and she just takes it and gets on with what she was supposed to be doing.

I very VERY rarely smack her but I always think is it deserved before I do.

Yes, my horse is very stick shy and I really only carry it to hold out at my side at cars to give us more room. I have only actually tapped the horse with it maybe three times in two years and that was when he tried to bite the horse that was on my inside, and it was only a small tap with the stick on his shoulder, ie don't bite X.

Antifaz won't tolerate anyone riding with a whip. Just as well that I've never found one necessary. Never needed one with PF except out hacking for when she plants herself staring at things.

I have never smacked my horse simply because I have never needed to but the other one often will get a bit of wallop for being so downright lazy, she will jog on for a few strides and then return to being a seaside donkey until she turns for home! What I really need is an electric cattle prod!

I've absolutely no idea as I've never whipped any of mine. I suspect if I were ever to ride with a whip they wouldn't have the faintest idea what it was.

I only really use a whip on mine to back up my leg aids when needed out hacking as they can be a bit nappy. Fudge will grunt and occassionally buck if you have to use a whip when he's being a pig to school although he has never done it with me.
